Post subject:  late model 318 904 and 63 /6 904 question

Hi Folks, I have an opportunity to get a 904 tranny that was mated to a 318 from an 80s police car.
I have a 63 Dart and am considering rebuilding the tranny but to get some experience I thought I might get a tranny to practice on.
Are there any parts that I could use from the later model tranny to fit my older tranny if I were to rebuild it?
Is it worth it and are there things to look out for?

Thanks guys.
John

There are not many parts that will fit, input shaft, output shaft, oil pump(s), valve body, parking mechanics, shift valve and so on are different, the biggest changes was 67/68 but there are minor changes at many times, but if you get it cheap go for it, it is always nice to have something to mess around with before you go for the real deal.

It's the easiest automatic there is to rebuild, nothing complicated, you don't need much special tools either.

A slide hammer to get the oil pump out is nice, you need some kind of tool to put the clutch packs together, but I use a U shaped piece of wood and a clamp for that an that works fine.

Get a good manual for the tranny and you should be fine, keep everything clean and remember how it was put together.

Old 904:s with rear oilpump is a bit messy to put the governor together on as the alignment is picky but you will not have that problem on a later tranny.
