So inherit this 1968 valiant with a slant six from my step daughter after she set it on fire. I had the engine overhauled, replaced the carb (holley 1920(after trying a seriously dis functional carter) exhuast manifold pertronix ign system and a bunch of nuts and bolts. I got down to the choke thermostat and I broke it, I have temp fixed it by disassembling the thermo stat and replaceing the rod I broke w a coat hanger, now I am have a issue with it hanging so I've decided to replace it oem or go electric choke.
1. Does anyone know where to get the right choke thermostat and or part number?

2. Pro or cons of the electric choke?

3. Oem calls for 0 to 5 degree before tdc I am currently running about 12. Is this normal for changing the ign system?

4. How in the world do I get my speedo to read the right speed?

Well that's enough bableing for now

Welcome to the forum!
!. Chokes are getting rally scarce. If this is like yours
Image
You CAN get one from http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/ When I was researching my Carter carb one of the carb folks I spoke with called the owner "Crazy John in Missouri"
He only sells the choke with a rebuild kit and they are not cheap. There may be other sources, maybe ebay sellers stores??? If you rebuild it, you'll know it intimately. If ya just want to drive it, keep looking.

2. Electric chokes have been available from BFIC/Carbs Only: http://www.carbsonly.com/frames/carsandtrks.htm
The major PRO seems to be availability and cost, don't know any CONS.

3. Lots of folks here run 10-12 BTC.

4. If the speedo is working freely, just not showing the correct speed, You'll need to find the correct pinion gear for the transmission. There's a process for that, but I don't know it. Someone here does. though.

I hope that helps

If you have MS-Excel, you can load one of the spreadsheets and use it to find your speedo (and determine rpm changes if you are also looking at changing tire sizes).

She set it on fire by accident and was not up to par on the car and feeding of her first vehicle.
