I park the Duster in the garage and if I go into the garage after I have been out driving around there is a raw gas smell this also happens if I come back to the car in a short period when out and about. I have checked for leaks and have found none. The smell does seem to come from the carb. I bought the carb. new off ebay (thanks SSDan) and right now it has a open air cleaner on it because I'm still looking for a early 70s V8 2 bbl air cleaner. Am I doomed to live with this or is there something I can check and fix.

Welcome to old carburated cars and the newly formulated 'stinky' gas...
Most of the problem is the hot engine soak after running then setting is boiling the gas in your carb and the vapors are finding a way out of the non-enclosed pietin.

Worst case scenario, you put 5 gallons of high-test in the tank, at least that stuff smells 'sweet' (and leaded of course...)...

next up would be EFI conversion.

A 73 shouldn’t smell too much of gas, weren’t these cars equipped with closed vapor loop venting? Check for correct float level. Check PCV system. Check fuel pump for leak, sniff dip stick for excessive raw gas smell.

D.Idiot I have heard this about the gas before and you have confrimed it but I did not know about the premium but at todays cost I'll deal with the smell. Also as soon as I find the air cleaner I,m looking for I,m hoping it might cut down on the smell.

wjajr I have checked and I have no leaks in the system. Starting from the metal supply line just before the pump I have all new EFI type rubber hoses, new fuel pump and filter. The PCV valve is also new though it is not a factory style one. I just checked the oil and there is no gas smell what so ever. As for the carb it is one part of cars I have never been good with so I would have to find somebody that could check it.

Thanks for your input.

You could consider a carb heat shield similar to aggressive Ted's.
It would definitely help with the heat soak.

For the classic car user "High-Test" is not premium...older folks used to the use the term "Ethyl" for it (when you could get 100 octane at the pump...), it now goes by the terms Race Gas or Avgas...you won't find it at the pump....Typical pump premium is still as stinky as the standard "plus" or regular.

FYI.

The closed vapor loop venting is for the gas tank ventilation, but barely covers the boil out on the carb - liquid and some vapor in the bowl does make it into the charcoal canister, but since it's not 'drawing' the vapors into the charcoal cannister like the vacuum from the carb or PCV source
the remnants have to find another way out (i.e. the main booster hole in the carb body).

x2 on making/getting a heat sheild.

I think the gas thing is a conspiracy to try to get rid of older cars  .

I'll have to add the heat shield to the list of things to do.

Sounds like charcoal canster is not doing it's job. Is the carb you bought a O.E. replacement for the 1973 model year? If so is the canister vapor hose connected to the bowl vent? If all is connected and you have the proper working gas cap you should have little to no smell. Check you vent lines at the tank and and rubber hoses all around the tank area.I'm not sure about the A body but I had a 72 B body California emission car that had a seperate vent manifold by the tank with 4 to 6 lines atatched . Do a search on here for Charcoal Cansters.I remember a thread that SS Dan gave part numbers for a replacement Canister.I think it was for GM as the Mopar canisters are no longer available. Just a thought.
