Post subject:  Power steering pump

My PSP is starting to make that wine noise when making turns and it does have enough fliud in it. Also when I turn left or right I HAVE to steer it back to straight it will not straighten out on its own. Am I in need of a new pump and if so where should I get one? Are any of the ones offered on Rock Auto worth buying? Thanks for any help.

I'd be concerned that you might have a problem with the steering box itself. A bad pump or stuck flow control valve could be noisy, but I wouldn't expect it to prevent the steering from self-centering after a turn.

Your symptoms remind me of a guy I knew with a Fury III- his box was bad enough that if you turned the steering wheel slightly left or right & raced the engine- the wheel would continue to turn itself!

Years ago I had a similar problem in my 71 Plymouth with the steering, but no noise - I replaced the control valve atop the steering box, adjusted it per FSM, and it's been fine since.

Yep, try adjusting the control valve on top of the steering box. IIRC the procedure is to very slightly loosen the mounting bolts and tap it fore and aft with a hammer until centred. But read the FSM and do it right.

Back in high school we did a motor job (a slant too) for a teacher. One of the other students was to remove the hoses from the pump. He decided it looked easier to just remove the two control valve bolts. None of us new that there was an adjustment procedure for that valve.
The new slant went into the car and the control valve was bolted to the box.
The teacher reached in through the window to start the car. His arm was through the steering wheel.
Well the motor fired and as soon as the pump made pressure the steering wheel whipped all the way to the right, just about snapping the teachers arm in half!

Thanks for the suggestions I will look into it. I will say that it is a possabilty because when I bought the car there were some repair bills in the glove box and 1 was for replacing the steering box.
