Post subject:  Knock it all out in one shot?
I have a leaky oil pan that needs to be tended to. I have a '69 Dart Custom /6 225. From what I gather either the suspension has to come off or the engine has to come out. I work on motorcycle engines, never on a car. My few questions go as follows.

1. Least invasive way to change the oil pan gasket?

2. At some point I'd like to paint the engine and do some sand blasting. Should I just take the leap and pull the engine(prepping and learning) along the way, do everything I want, replacing gaskets and such and call it good?

I guess depending on how easy question one is, debates whether or not I do step two at this juncture. Im moving in the next month. Id atleast like to get the oil pan resolved before it makes the two hour trip to my new place.

I would pull the engine. I have never changed a slant 6 pan in the car, but it looks & sounds like a Major PITA!
Once the engine is out, painting, gaskets and whatever else would be easy.


P.S.-ever work on a Benelli Sei or old Honda CBX? Slants are alot like them with the engine turned sideways! :lol:

I have two older Yamaha's. A '81 XS400 and a '78 XS650. Haha

Yep. If you're going to do the other work then pull the engine and get it all done. Just too much of a hassle to try it in the car (pretty much the time it takes to prep the car and pull the oil pan is about equal to pulling the engine without the ease of access and convenience.

I have done a pan swap in the car... ONCE (out of 40 times?). Faster and easier/better to pull the engine and do it topside.

Once that engine is out, all kinds of little projects become much easier such as; repainting block, radiator, engine bay, K member, replacing brake line passing length of fire wall to pass side cylinder or caliper if need, and servicing steering gear.

Yeah their is plenty to be done like with all of our rides. Redoing brake lines and such would be great.

russ225, do yourself a favour, and invest in Real Gasket's silicone rubber gaskets for your oil pan, instead of the standard cork gaskets. Definitely not cheap at $34.00, but it's very unlikely that you'll ever have a leak again.

When the engine is out, (make sure all fluids are drained), pull the carb, then flip the eng over using an eng stand. Life ( & oil pan gaskets ) are much easier when gravity is helping you.
