So if this thing doesn't rotate can it cause the engine to run hot?

Post subject:  Sorta...

If it's stuck in the 'diverter' position the hot exhaust gas gets mostly deflected out the tail pipe...if in the other position is keeps the floor of the intake hot which could nicely atomize the incoming gas, but if it also heats the air you get less than normal fuel or air getting delivered to the cylinder.

"PB blaster" applied to shaft ends after a while a gentle tap with a small hammer to make shaft move side to side should free up the flapper. You might have to repeat several times, just be patient.

It was stuck closed, I freed it up now I have to drive it on the highway and see if the temps stay normal

Just FYI, one other thin to consider, my '67 had come with the Holley 1920 and had a low end jet in it (#54 I think)...that might also cause a lean condition exacerbating the overheating issue. Bumping it up to a #57 would help.

Well the rad was plugged and the heat rizer wasn't moving. I got a used rad out of a 79 pickup that had a 318 so its a 22" rad. I finally got the timing almost right and went for a ride. Still has a slight ping so I have to back off the timing a few more degrees. Its at about 3* after right now. That doesn't seem right to me though that the timing should be 5* AFTER TDC. Any way it doesn't go above 1/2 way on the temp gage now.

Timing should BE TDC plus or minus 2 1/2°

Well I guess it doesn't matter. I was 20 miles from Mason Dixon Dragway for this weekends race and the engine started knocking. Time to find a replacemant engine and start all over.
