I have a 1968 slant 6 mechanical lifters with very low miles which has professionally been rebuilt for performance. It ran great before rebuild but now I keep bending push rods apparently due to lack of oil typically the number one cylinder. I have read the all articles I can find and I have heard two ways to install the rocker shaft both opposite. I do not have any notches on the shaft for reference. I have a different rockers than I see on all the other slant 6 pictures. Mine are cast iron and not the pressed steel like the typical ones. I am going to try and post some pictures. When I have the holes in the rocker shaft facing the valves I get a some very small droplets of oil coming from the holes in the top of the rocker arms but none reaches the valve guides. It appears all else receives a small amount of oil. When I place the holes in the rocker arm shaft facing the pushrods I receive plenty of oil out the back to the push rods and lifters but still none to the valves and springs. How do I get oil to the valve guides? Do they need oil? Any help is appreciated. [/url] |

THIS article may help. I document the two different styles of slant six rocker arms and rocker arm shafts and explain how the holes in the rocker arm shaft are supposed to be oriented in relation to the cylinder head and valves. Do post pictures of the rocker arms you are running. |

Pics would be great, since you say cast iron, and your build was for performance it sounds like you may have an early style performance rocker arms similar to the now aluminum style RAS rockers. Pictures would help clear that up if that is the case. We've had issues with the RAS rockers not oiling and you may need to have yours drilled to oil correctly. -D.Idiot |

It sounds like you have an old set of Gotha rocker arms on this new engine. If it were me, I would swap-on a set of factory rocker arms and see if those oil... and solve your problem(s). Another option is to install a "top oiler" tube into the valve cover and use that to drop oil right on top of each valve. DD

I like the top oiler idea. That might be a fix. I had one of these cast iron rocker set ups before and it had a similar problem. In that case I did just swap the entire assembly. This is the performance 1:6 ratio that Cliiford put on when they built this. It is strange I have at least 60psi based on my oil guage but when I remove the rear rocker shaft bolt oil just barly runs out. I would expect it to be pushing oout like crasy all over the place. The other possible cause is a incorrectly installed rear cam bearing and / or a off location oil passage hole, in the rear of the cam. (# 4 cam journal) DD

Thank you all so much for the help. Now I am wondring if the cam bearing is not in right. This was done by Clifford well his supported machine shop. How much oil should I see coming out of the rear rocker shaft bolt hole with the bolt removed? I have just a dribble very little volume. When I place the rocker shaft facing the valves I get a little dribble of oil out of the top of the rocker arms. But not enought to reach the valve guides. Where did you connect for the oil pick up? At the oil pump I see a place where the pressure gauge connects. Unfortunately I cannot see the pictures in the article on Hydraulic lifters. I wonder if these rockers are made for hydraulic lifters. Tough if that was the case I would expect the adjusting screws to be hollow so oil could push up thru them? |
