ok...

1973 dart 225 slant six
1920 Holley 1bbl

Just rebuilt it today. I was missing the accelerator pump return spring...so I got one and put it in. triple checked everything, and put in back on the car.

It runs GREAT. No flat spot, no weird idle. BUT!

It squeals. I mean, squeals like its powered by a hundred REALLY angry rats. Or like the tea kettle is going off. Its actually really difficult to listen to. :/ I thought it was a vacuum leak, but I cant pinpoint exactly where its coming from because its so darn loud! :x

Or thought maybe the bottom butterfly? because It didn't sit in there tight, but someone told me it didn't need to?

So...does anyone have an idea? or if it is a vacuum leak, how to find it and KILL it? :evil:

1)Check your PCV valve.

2)Make sure you stay well away from Kroger.

Spray the venturi shaft ends to see if it needs to be re-bushed and or check to see if the base gasket is correct one.....?
PCV hole in the gasket lined up.....?
Choke unload-er diaphragm ruptured?

By pure chance, I stumbled upon a similar situation in an article about an old BMW.

A higher-than-normal crankcase vacuum may also cause the crankshaft oil seals to leak outside air into the crankcase. This can cause a whistling or howling noise from the front or rear seal areas at idle. In extreme cases, it may sound like a freight train is pulling into your stall. The noise can be pretty alarming, and is usually enough to motivate customers to seek professional help for the problem.
Check that you have connected the hose to your PCV valve to the correct carburetor connector.

Very simple to check if this is the cause: disconnect the hose where it attaches to the PCV valve, and plug it. If the sound disappears: BINGO!
