Good recommendation Charlie, I know a couple of 'old timer' mechanics in my area that used to install those on trucks that were used in construction and industrial use...if there was no oil pressure it would not allow ignition or electric fuel pump if equipped, saved a lot of motors during the winter months. Definitely can see the safety concern in race vehicles especially if fuel injected where the high pressure and volume can pump gallons in little time into the fire. -D.Idiot |

Most engines with EFI, will not allow the fuel pump to operate, if the ECM does not see a crank trigger signal. Most drag/street cars with carbs, and electric fuel pumps, do not have this safety feature. |

The old Chevy Vegas had an oil pressure switch for their electric pumps! I have wired a few cars with relays for the same deal. On a race car, I think your master battery cut off would be another way to shut the pump off. We've all had one of those Homer moments! Sad to see the damage but really glad no one was hurt and the fire was contained to engine bay. |

I had an electric pump wired to the oil pressure switch for a short period of time...on my 84' d150 truck There were 2 wires coming off the oil pressure switch that were getting voltage in the RUN position. I ended up wiring it to the one wire that was getting voltage when you turned the key to run so it would come on when the ignition was turned on. An old school guy in his 70's who has helped me with the truck some warned me about the electric fuel pump should not come on unless the engine is running and getting oil pressure I ended up taking the electric off because i felt it would be too unreliable and didn't want to be left road side and decided to use a mechanical pump for now. Later on i will add a low pressure electric as an assist for the mechanical pump. I think if i had wired it to the other wire getting voltage it would have been correct. I'll have to make sure next time i try using an electric pump It's a shame that happened...i'll make sure to learn from it next time i setup a electrical pump |

Old Cars. I have always carried a Fire Extinguisher. Only had to use it once in 32 years(electrical fire),but it is cheap insurance. |
