So I was putting the power steering box back in and I am pretty sure I lined the pitman arm back up but I have tightened down pretty far but not enough to get both the nut and the locking washer in place. I have followed 2 of the keys that I can see from the bottom back to the steering box and I can feel my finger land right on them. I am having a lot of trouble turning any further. Any suggestions? Maybe some wd40 or grease or something? Should it be this hard? |

If this is for an early a body they have a smaller shaft for the pitman arm than later cars you may also have a problem with the steering coupler being to small for the power steering box. Brian |

It is an early a body 65 Barracuda. How much is the difference? I had both boxes next to each other while I was swapping things and did not notice and perceivable difference. |

All manual boxes for A, B, E Mopar cars had the same sector shaft, AFAIK. There were some C-body and Van/truck units with bigger shafts. Power boxes had two different sizes, one that is the same as the car manual box. Lou |

It is a power steering box. It does feel like it started but then it just got crazy hard to turn. Does anyone know the difference in sector size? Is it easily seen by eye? 1st |

FWIW, I would pull it back off and examine the splines carefully, clean them thoroughly, chill the shaft with dry ice and try again with a good slippery lube. Of course I might be wasting my time and the dry ice, but it's a thought..... BC |

I am going to have to take it back apart the sector shafts are the same 1.1 inches. |

Or compressed CO2 would work, and heat the pitman arm sector shaft connection with a torch and it should slide on easy assuming the sector shaft splines are nice and clean.-D.Idiot |

OMG I got everything back on but holy hell it required a ridiculous amount of force to get that back on. I heated the pitman arm but did not have anything to cool the sector shaft. I ended up using an 18" breaker AND a 22" helper and cranked it on at about a 1/4 turn at a time. I also got the steering shaft mostly back on. I am using a phillips head and dead blow to tap it back on. Its mostly in place but gonna be a bit further. |

I think when I did mine, I used a 3/4" drive ratchet then switched to the 3/4" drive torque wrench.You might take a rest before tackling the balljoints...  -D.Idiot |
