Post subject:  Hardened Oil Pump Gears, They are Done!

I have "begged, borrowed and bought" a bunch of SL6 oil pump gears and I am getting them ready for a Heat Treat run for case hardening.

If you send me your gear(s) I will include it with this batch and you will get yourself a hardened gear for next to nothing. ($2.00 + Postage)

The heat treater I use charges me by the run so the more gears the better.

BTW, I also lap the teeth real smooth before I send them off to be hardened.

My plan is to send these off to be heat treated around the first week in April so don't wait if you want to get your's included in this run.

How about the opposite of heat treating. I found this site to be interesting. www.cryopro.com

Doc, I don't currently have a gear to send you, but I presume you are getting all those done to have for sale. How much are you charging for these? I'm sure I'll be needing one.

BTW, your offer to get the user's gears done for about free is very generous. Thank you.

I will have some hardened gears available for sale after this run but don't be surprized at the cost, which will end-up in the $30.00 range when everything is added-up. (I need to cover my costs)

An option for you is to go out and buy a pump rebuild kit which includes the gear, I just bought a bunch of the "thin rotor" (.640) kits from Melling, they run about $25.00 each from most parts stores.

http://www.dutra.org/pictures/engine/pa ... mp-kit.jpg

Thin rotor factory "6 bolt hole" oil pump kit is Melling # K66A. They also have a rebuild kit for the 7/8 thick "5 bolt hole" aftermarket pump. (K66CA) Kits come with and with-out the gear so be sure to get the kit with the gear. (the "A" in the p/n)

Another option is to buy a complete pump assembly (new pump) and pull the gear off of that. I see oil pumps on special now and then for $40-50.00 (FYI, many of the hardened gears from this run are "earmarked" to be used on custom ported and flowed oil pumps but one of these special oil pumps will be in the $100.00 price range)

So, you have some options, act fast and you can get yourself a hardened gear and a rebuild kit or new pump assembly for about the same cost a hardened gear alone will be, after this run is completed.

Is a hardened gear needed for a stock street driven engine that never sees over 4000RPM?

Post subject:  Hardened Gear Help!

Doc,
I have a new MP hp pump. Exactly hows the easiest way to get the gear off of the shaft without damaging the gear? I like to send it to you but don't want to mess it up taking it off. And thank you for the generous offer.

Where do we send them, Doc?
How would you prefer to get the money?

Post subject:  OP Gear Removal...

The best way to get a gear off the pump shaft off is with a gear puller.
Just be sure the pulling force is not at the outer edge but in towards the solid gear center. (jaw type pullers can chip the teeth if they start to slip-off)

For No Keyway gears ONLY, you can remove the pump cover and press (drive) the the impeller (rotor) shaft out. Support the pump face on soft wood so you don't nick the cover / O-ring surface.

As for stock applications, yes, we have seen failures on stock build-ups using aftermarket oil pumps so a hardened gear is good insurance.

If yousend me a gear, be sure to include a note with your return mailing address and tell me if you need a Keyway Slot in the gear you get back. (No keyway gears are stronger, I have seen them crack right along the key slot)
Payment, anyway you like, I trust everyone until prooven otherwise. (I do keep good records)

Post subject:  slant 6 oil pump

Hey guys. All this oil pump talk has me wondering... Any of you out there need a new slant oil pump? I have a brand new one still in the box, found it laying in the trunk of my project Volare when I got it home. :o Now fellow Slanters, do not kill me, I am swapping to a V8, I sold the low mile 225 so I do not have a need for this oil pump. It it a Melling, Number
M-66C. Make me an offer that I can't refuse. My E mail is Donram360@cs.com. 8)

Post subject:  Heat Treat Run, Progress Report...

Thanks to everyone that has sent me oil pumps gears, at last count I had 71 and a few more since.

I have been Lapping on the "bucket load" of gears for weeks now, I just do a few whenever I have a moment. (or get bored doing it) I finally got through the last few today. (I bet my neighbors are tired of hearing my drill motor "sing it's one note song")

It is interesting to see how much difference there is gear to gear, some run smooth right off and lap-in quickly, others feel rough and take more work to "lap-in". :?

I have the Heat Treater all ready to go, had them do some additional hardness testing last week, to double-check some Melling, Dyna Gear and used gears others had sent. New gears test the softest, both suppliers tested the same, some used ones were harder, the gears I had heat treated last year are the hardest. (a sample from that last batch)

Anyway, I am still waiting for Melling to send me the final batch of rebuild kits. These are the ones for the group buy and I found-out that Melling is "making-up more kits" to fill our order. (it sounds like we "cleaned them out") I plan to wait 1 more week and then go to Heat Treat, with or with-out the last group of gears.

Bottomline is that any last minute people can send me a gear and still make it into this run. So we are close to getting this project finished, stay tuned.

Post subject:  Heat Treat Run Is Done!!

Great job everyone, the grand total is 89 Slant Six oil pump gears, which are now case hardened to 42 Rc, .020 deep.

I will be sending hardened gears back to all the people who sent them to me. I also have a bunch of Melling rebuild kits from Red's group buy, these will also be mailed-out soon, with a hardened gear swapped into the kit.

Thanks again to everyone who sent me gears, we got a pretty good deal out of this Heat Treat run.
(hardening cost us a tad over $1.00 per gear)
Special thanks goes out to Red and Rick Covalt for their extra "behind the screen" help to pull things together on this project.
