Hello I have had this problem for quite awhile now While driving in the evening my headlamps dim while idling and not throttling. Also the dash lights do the same thing. My battery recently was completely drained I took in in and had a battery test and alternator check, after charging all evening. the test found battery ok, and voltage regulator was deemed bad. changed out the VR and had test done again, came back bad again from test, an old timer at Autozone suggested I unplug the VR while running and this would fix the problem. I did so. My car is still running and haven't notice any starting issues. So are these problems all connected? does the Lights have anything to do with my VR being bad or is their other problem here that are contributing to my malfunctions. Because even though I changed out my VR the lights and dash are still doing the same thing. Also I posted awhile back on For A Bodies Only my alternator reader shoots to +40 when starting then goes back down to just over the 0. A member on there suggested the article here http://www.madelectrical.com/electri...p-gauges.shtml , To which I checked my wires and they are not burned out under the hood and connector areas. So in all in all I am stumped on what to do Any input is highly appreciated Thanks Van Leer |

A good, quick check is to unplug the bulkhead connector on the firewall, with the engine off. Spray both sides of the connector with WD40 and plug and unplug that connector a few times. If that improves your situation, you will know where the problem area is. That test is not a substitute for proper cleaning and maintenance of the bulkhead connector, but just a quick and dirty checking procedure. Thanks, Ill give it a shot, it seems lately I have one hundred and one things to do with this vehicle. This seems rather simple Ill start there then work my way around the electric system. I just ordered all my tune up items and just waiting for delivery, hopefully ill have everything squared away with the Plymouth and my Chevelle for the upcoming car show this July 12. I wish I had a cherry picker to be able to pull engine out and give it a good cleaning, I'm guessing there is oil residue on it still from 1974! Thanks for the info Van Leer |
