Post subject:  front end noise on my '61 Valiant

I have a slight rumbling noise which appears to be coming from the front end. As the speed increases so does the noise.

I have changed the front wheel bearings but the noise is still present.

Any ideas as to the problem?

Thanks, Peter

If it's not bearings it has to be drums I guess, can you hear any noise if you turn the wheels by hand ? brake shields touching the drums or something like that maybe ?

Gravel in hub caps ? (I guess not if you have replaced the bearings)

If you have some old balancing springs around the drums, not sure if that was ever used on valiants though, they can be noisy if there is rust flakes flying around in there.

Anything hanging down that can touch the wheels ?

It's always related to how fast the car is driving (speed) ? it is not engine related in any way ?

Thanks for your reply.

I have fitted ventilated discs so it won't be anything to do with the drums and I have checked out the other points you mentioned but it all seems ok.

As I have fitted different stub axles for the discs / calipers (from a later model Valiant) I assume that is not a problem.

I am thinking the noise is possibly from the tyres. (I bought new white wall tyres).

What do you think?

Peter

Have you checked to see if the bearing race(s) are tight in the rotors?
(races can "spin" in the hub and make the noise your discribe)
