got to make one.( starter cable) .service. manual shows the big battery to starter wire being 6 ga going to 10 ga, appearantly with some type fuse between/ both my /6 dusters just have big wire from battery to starter. is this change in wire size and fuse necessary???? i am aware of the need for additional volt regulator to be added to instrument cluster, BUT is there any other buggers i need to address on this /6 dart!???? anything that will cause problem for headlight switch?? thanks for any advice. |

I'm confused. My '64 Dodge FSM doesn't show a wire gauge change or a fuse in the starter cable. here's the page: http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/64dar ... 7.jpg.html None of my '63 & '64 darts have any such thing, just a heavy gauge wire straight from the battery to the starter solenoid (not the starter relay on the firewall) like you describe in your Duster. Also, I've never heard of an "additional" voltage regulator added to the instrument cluster. Your Instrument Cluster Voltage Regulator is inside the fuel gauge. They can and do fail, but there are several ways to fix the situation. I can't think of anything that would cause a problem for your headlight switch, other than a massive wiring screwup! There is help available here, but I need a better understanding of what you're working with. If you are going to work on your '65 Dart, you NEED the '65 Dodge Factory Service Manual. I prefer the ones on CD, rather than the paper ones. BC |

i was lookin at the sho service manual but lookin at it wrong on the starter wire. in th e article section here it talks about the common problem of the gauge failin because the volt limiter in gauge failed and a cure, however, the parts store wanted $42 for the volt lmiter they started using in 67. i think i'm getin old and tired!??? |

You're not alone in that "old and tired" condition! I like working on my Darts because it reminds me of my younger days and it also gives me a chance to put some modern tricks into them. Good thing you didn't spent that money on the '67 and up instrument voltage regulator. They CAN be made to work for the older clusters, but it's kind of an involved process. There are a lot of articles about instrument voltage regulators on the web. One of the best is HERE. Just goes to show us that there's more than one way to skin a cat - but the cat won't like any of 'em. You mentioned "the shop manual" Do you have the one I mentioned, or one of those bird cage liners from Haynes or Chilton? Let us know how you are progressing, and ask questions - lots of answers here. BC |
