Ed- My 24:1 is just over 5 turns to stop! Adjusted all the way in and still alittle sloppy.
I'll keep scrounging around, we still have a few good yards in my area.

I have a worn 24:1 Manual Steering Box and would like to switch it to a 20:1 Manual Steering Box. Is there a way to tell the difference from the exterior? Did they come in certain cars? (Donor) or was it an option? -Thanks Dan |

20:1 worm gears were aftermarket for the longest time, the 16:1 boxes were stock on the big block A-body cars...Not too long ago the 20:1 gears weren't available anymore unless NOS, rumors had it that some new ones came out and were chinese (soft material used in the worm). I know Firm-Feel hasn't had any for a few years now. I will say though, in a Pre-73 A-body with a slant 6 the 20:1 box is a good upgrade to steering.... Good luck on the hunt. (I know that manual steering boxes in general in junkyards are not easy to find anymore, period...) -D.Idiot |

You can figure it out by seeing how many turns lock-to-lock on the steering gear. I believe the 24:1 is 4.5 turns. 20:1 is 3.5 (from memory, could be wrong....) |

Stock 24:1 is about 5.5 turns, 20:1 is 4.5 turns, 16:1 is 3.5 turns. For the money of that Jegs/MP part, you can almost buy a brand new Flaming River 19:1 box. I have one of those and they work very well (comparable to a freshly rebuilt 20:1 Mopar). Lou |

Flaming river only shows the 16:1 manual box...they only are offering the 20:1 boxes in GM/BOP platforms. I also see that they no longer offer the mopar power steering box that had some quality control issues a few years ago... -D.Idiot |

I recall reading that the 16:1 label was misinformation, the box behaved lock-to-lock as if it were a 19:1. It caught on and people have called it 19:1 out of habit, but they are referring to the 16:1 labeled box. |

I have seen 16:1 and 19:1 listed for that same (only one) Flaming River box. It has pretty close to 4.3 turns lock-lock, so I am betting it is 19:1. It doesn't feel as tough to turn as my Mopar 16:1 either. Lou |

Last year (or was it '11) Mopar Performance and I think Steer and Gear got a "new" batch of 20:1 worm gear sets, since these had been out of stock for a few years (I think Midi got the last real one from Firm Feel and they no longer offer 16 or 20:1 any more)...After people jumped on the new batch there were sporadic reports about the material being 'softer' and the gears falling out of adjustment to easily and tolerances not being correct.Although in the beginning there were some QA issues with some of Flaming River's stuff, if their 16:1 is a 19:1 and it holds up to Lou's suspension mods and abuse, it should work OK in a pre-73). -D.Idiot |

Which pitman arm does the flaming river use (early or late)? And I forgot the cutover date between the early and late arms......... |

I bolted the FR box right into my '66 Valiant w/stock small sector pitman arm. Do not expect FR to answer your questions in an informed way, unless you somehow get to the engineer(s) who designed the box. I have never gotten a satisfactory answer out of anyone on this. Lou |
