Post subject:  Aftermarket 198 rods

I first found these K1 rods on ebay for just under $500 for a set of 6, $525 on this site.

They also have Molnar for only $450 a set.

I've heard those 7.005" 198 rods can be hard to find from time to time. Nice to see there's an AM solution, albeit pricey. K1 is even good enough to make one set for forged cranks and one for cast (which is what I'm working with).

Part #s
K1 - Forged - dh7005behb6-a
K1 - Cast - dh7005behb-N6-a
Molnar - DH7005UHB6

Anyone with experiences or criticisms, feel free to comment.

Many people on here have used the K1 rods, they have been out for 3 years now. I have a set going in my motor that is with the machinist. I have not gotten to the stage of checking the big & small end bores and eccentricity, but I imagine they are pretty good. The machining takes place in the US even though the forgings are chinese. I think Molnar is similar.

Post subject:  Oil holes..

Somebody should sound off on the latest set of rods since I think the K1 had a small issue with oil hole locations in them, but everything else was good quality.

Mine are about 2 months old, direct from K1. I'll check and let you know.

Well that's irony... a little over 3 years ago, I retired my slant car and figured I'd get around to a rebuild "someday" because I couldn't find anyone with rods out of a 198 for sale at the time... it's taken me this long to get back to it.

LOL, that's life...

Too bad you were more local, I'd save you the parts, time and block machining...got one in the parts for sale section...

My recent production rods checked out perfectly. Big end bores were within .0005, or as close as I can measure them. Small end bores were within .0001. Small end pin clearance is a little on the tight side for a high rpm drag motor, .004, but fine for a street motor. Notches are in the right place and the right width.

We bought a set of K-1's about three years ago and have had zero problems with them, running 10-pounds of boost and 5,500 rpm repeatedly with them.

That has been our experience in a turbo 225 motor with a 904, in a 2,700-pound car.

What piston is everybody running with the aftermarket rods?

The Wiseco piston is the offering that most people use. It's a great racing setup.

This piston should run at zero deck. There are variations in decks, but it will be close. Pay close attention to combustion chamber size, as a modified head can push compression past pump fuels.
What kind of fuel do you want to use? There are metric options, but you may need either a custom piston or modified small end to work with a different pin size.

Post subject:  Wiseco pistons....

Measured with a some colored olive oil and a burette, (and a 1/4"-thick see-thru plastic plate,) our combustion chambers came out tp exactly 9:1, with a non-milled head and a non-milled deck. That was with a .020"-thick gasket, un-modified chambers, and six, off-the-shelf, Wiseco 3.465" pistons and K-1 rods.

No problems. so far (with that setup.) LOTS of problems, otherwise... LOL!

Bill

PS, we set the end-gap on the rings at .024" top and .022" 2nd. Maybe a little tight...

I know it sounds strange but these rods wouldn't work with a press fit type piston would it?

Author:  billdedman [ Sun Nov 17, 2013 9:48 pm ]
Post subject:  so green, here...

The rod's wrist-pin diameter is likely too big for a press-fit pin, but if that's what you want they could deliver them to you with a smaller diameter. You just need to call them and tell them what you want; they are very accommodating.

Give them a shout; all they can say is "no....".

The Wiseco/K-1 setup went together very smoothly... :) And, we were/are novices of the first magnitude...

You used the wiseco off-the-shelf pistons and got 9.0:1???

I can't see how that's possible - my head is only milled .020, and relieved to be near stock cc (55/56cc) and I am at almost 10.5:1 with some pop-up.
