| Post subject: | Newbie - Which distributor for my Valiant ´66? |
Hello all, I am Stefan from Germany and I owned a ´66 Plymouth Valiant Signet Convertible with a 225 Slant Six, automatic transmission. Mostly original. Right now I have a problem. My Plym did not start and i found out that it was a broken distributor gear. So I bought a new gear (Dorman 90453). But it does not fit. After checking my distributor, i found out that the distributor is part no. 2444255. When I take a look in the car parts manual, I find the distributor no. 2642329 for my car, and the no 2444255 for a 170 cui manual transmission. Could anyone tell me the difference between 2444255 and 2642329? Does distributor 2444255 really fit to my 225 cui ? Do I need the dorman 90450 gear, will this fit into distributor 2444255? Or is it better to buy a complete new distributor such as Autoline D22, D62 or a Mallory 4562201 or any other and where to buy? Thanks from a (frustrated) German Slant Six Fan Stefan |

Welcome to the site. The 90453 gear is for a Ford. You need the 90450 All slant six distributers will fit in any slant six engine. The differences are the mechanical, and vacuum advance curves, and whether the distributer is points or electronic. EDIT: Correct gear is the 90450 |

Yep, Help/Dorman 90450 should be correct.Generally speaking any distributor from a 170/198/225 slant six can fit any other slant six. What will be different is the springs and vacuum advance that govern the ignition (or in the later versions electronic ignition), some may be slower, some may limit the advance in lieu of more initial. Usually the advance curves are noted in the Electrical section of the field manual ( section 8 ), and are under specification. You can use the distributor but it may not be the most efficient for your application. -D.Idiot |

My Plymouth is back on the road again. Special thanks to Charrlie_S, DusterIdiot and SlantSixDan for the distributor informations in this forum. -D.Idiot: What do you mean by "You can use the distributor but it may not be the most efficient for your application. "? |

The 170 in stock form lacks some power compared to the 225. To keep the engine from pinging the distributor's advance curve may be a little lazy, so it will work for a 225, but it may not be the most efficient for the larger engine. -D.Idiot |
