Just got this back from the machine shop. It was started by my friend Bobby years ago, but never got finished. So I had the holes taken to 3.55. It's an inch and a half of aluminum. I have decided to bore my 170 as the block just looked a little too loose. So I am going to use this now and see how it works.

Cool! Should work great. I have one in steel that is 2" thick - HEAVY.

is aluminum strong enough to get the desired effect?

Should be. My machinist made one from Aluminum, not even as thick as this one. It just needs to give the headbolts something to torque against.

Wouldn't steel be cheaper then the aluminum? Machining the aluminum would be easier and probably make up the difference.

Post subject:  Steel or Aluminum

Well Bobby did make a steel one that I used to use. But I left it in the good care of one Sir Will of Glochester! So I took the other less travelled path and finished this aluminum one. Thanks Bobby!

I am sure it is stiff enough to replicate the head stresses/strains. I have wondered if just running some bolts into the block with some individual washers/spacers wouldn't give you almost the same effect.
