Post subject:  OHC Slant Six

I was an engineer at Chrysler from 1967 – 1971. I designed an OHC slant six while I was at Chrysler and I built it as a 170 cu in version in 1971 - 1972. I installed the engine in a Dart and drove it for about 500 miles. I wanted to use the engine as an example of OHC conversion so I could convince someone to help me create an OHC conversion for the 392 HEMI. I was unable to find interest for this project so I sold the car in 1973.
In 1992, a friend of mine saw my engine at the MSU engine laboratory. I purchased the engine from MSU and it has been stored in garages ever since.
I originally was going to rebuild the engine and install it in a Dart. However, I am now thinking that I really don’t need another car. So, I would like to sell the engine.
Do you have any idea of who might be interested in purchasing this engine?

PM Doug Dutra (Doc) on this forum.

Do you have any pictures? Many of us who are not necessarily interested in buying it would love to see what it looks like.

I know a number of members would be VERY interested in any details you could provide about the conversion process and how it was achieved. Pictures, diagrams, tech papers, discussion, etc... would be greatly appreciated.

You can e-mail me any pictures you would like posted and I will post them for you. My direct e-mail is reedspeirlaw at seanet dot com Remove the spaces and replace the "at" and "dot".

Post subject:  This is SO cool!

Here are the pictures and info I have received from Mr. Grundy. This is pretty dang cool in my book.

Subject: Slant Six - Day 1 of disassembly

Began taking engine apart:

* There were 2 gaskets under plexiglas cover and bottom one will need to be replaced.

* Valve gear looked good with no wear and only superficial marks on some of the rollers.

* MSU must have removed intake and exhausts because there were only three bolts holding them on - there are a lot of studs missing from the head. Also, I think there is at least one bracket that was supposed to go from intake to block that is missing. Also, there were no gaskets between intake/exhausts and head.

* The clutch plate and the flywheel have no wear - buyer must not have driven much.

* Timing belt appears ok but I would worry about age.

* Missing starter.

* Missing arm and throw out bearing for clutch actuation.

Subject: Day 3 of disassembly

Removed cam thrust bearing assembly. Order for pieces starting at #1 bracket and then moving forward:

* Washer with 4 scallops on inside diameter
* Needle bearing washer
* Washer
* Two 1/2 washers with large diameter facing to rear
* Tru-Arc snap ring

Removed cam and brackets.

I asked Mr. Grundy what cam was used and if he remembers any of the other parts that were used and here is his response:

"I looked in my old files and unfortunately, I didn't record the PN [for the cam]. I think it was either the timing belt from the Pontiac OHC six or it was a Uniroyal timing belt. The tensioner was from a Pinto engine. The rocker arms were my design and the rollers were from the Ford 427 SOHC engine."

Look close to see the Hyperpak manifolds!

A cam drive from the back, what a neat idea!

What does the belt drive off the crank look like? Is it a cogged hub bolted to the crank flange? And then the flywheel bolted to the cogged hub?

I suspect it is a cog bolted to the back of the crank that doubles as the spacer to the clutch, like the spacer in the old slant to smallblock adapter system on the mid 60s A series vans and trucks.

Was the stock cam and timing setup left in place to drive the oil pump and distributor?
