Post subject:  Underbody paint/protective coating?

I am going to be de-rusting and repainting the underbody on my brother's 74 Duster in the hopefully near future. The car was factory undercoated and has only minor surface rust.

I will likely be taking it down to bare metal and want to put on a paint and/or protective coating that will be durable and protect the underbody from rust. Any recommendations on a product or products that I can use? I am looking at Eastwood chassis black right now.

Thanks.

I used 3 cans of 3M Ruberized undercoating on the Hyperpak duster 12 years ago, still doing it's job, and the road noise was a bit quieter than my '74 was with just the jute padding...

Interesting. I like rubberized undercoating, I think I will use it!

I agree, but I would suggest a good base paint on bare metal first, like one of the POR-15 products.

I used a heat gun to take off the old undercoating. Don't let it fall on you. It will burn to crap out of you if it does. There was more rust under there than met the eye. Use some kind of rust converter. I like Captain Lees Metal Prep and conditioner. It is the only metal prep you do not have to wash down with water. Then follow up with POR 15 of some color. Black is the most common.

Thanks! I will have to do some investigation before I decide exactly what will be needed to deal with the underbody.
