the rear in my Valiant (1975, 7.25, LBP) is humming. I pulled the cover and noticed that the spider gears are pitted. (No metal bits in the fluid). The pits are smallish - say the size of a few grains of sand. Ring gear seems to be perfect. Spinning a wheel by hand with both wheels off the ground make the typical egg beater sound rears make. If I start the car and put it in drive with only one wheel off the ground everything is too noisy to tell where the sound is coming from. (I did both sides, no discernible difference).

This car set for years before I made it into a local beater. Are the pits typical? Are they caused by rust? Are they likely to be the source of my humming?

The rear seemed to quiet down with 85W gear oil and a tube of "posi" lube (even tho it is not a posi) for about 10 miles but now is back to where it was before. (Sometimes these "improvements" are more "wishful thinking" it's not like I measured the sound)

I can't see how the spider gears are the source.

When you're going in a straight line, the spider gears aren't even turning.......

Teach it the words! :D

It could be something as simple as a bad wheel bearing. Check them first.

Dive it until it breaks... then replace it with a better unit.
