I have a chance to purchase a parts car (xpolice)
wondering if the front suspension is to wide for our 1968 dart

I saw a build on the Hamb using this front suspension but generally it's pickup trucks..also saw a fast and loud show where they use one..any thoughts ?

Why would you even be considering the Ford suspension? Better brakes? That's the only thing I can think of that makes sense. The suspension would require major surgery to any vehicle and could be catastrophic to a unibody car.

is the ford crown vic unibody?

my stock front suspension is trash
parts for it would be more expensive then the complete vic
I can rob the front suspension and scrap the rest being in +$

You might have the Ford front suspension parts but fabricating a way to mount them to the Dart would be far more expensive and difficult than rebuilding and upgrading the Dart suspension.

well I built a 327/turbo 400 V8 trike with a inshop narrowed rear/water running through the frame to a rear radiator..in motorcycles back in the day fab'in was the only way.

dart
frame ties on the chassis

just wondering the width

here's a youtube of a ford truck project

If all you want is the width go find the Ford's track width and see how much wider it is than the Dart's track width. If you want to know that the Ford Panther chassis was the last body-on-frame passenger car built in the US I bet you could find that info somewhere. Wikipedia jumps to mind.

CV sub frame is too wide for an A Body to just stick it under and bolt it up

Crown Vic is a frame on build. Newer Vic's utilized a modular sub frame mounted front suspension and engine cradle.

Chances are good the a used cop car will be need of a lot of suspension & front end repairs.

The frame width on the truck is 34" The CV is too wide for it. Its way wide for an A body

That Crown Vic swap in the video is strictly hillbilly. ,,,,,but it makes more sense in the Ford PU than in a Dart.

I am currently working on a late B suspended 1951 DeSoto.

That wont fly in an Abody either.

Hmmm, didn't even box the frame. I also would have mounted the bottom of the frame to the cradle, eliminating the 2" spacer, thus lowering the front stance by the same amount.

A few years ago, I looked at the Crown Vic swap for my Volare (F-body). It's got a LOT to like. Fast ratio rack and pinion. stiff Cop springs and it bolts in as an assembly. But, once I pulled out the tape measure, it was pretty clear the Crown Vic unit was just too wide for the F-body. When centered on the frame (or what passes for a frame in Mopars), the lower control arms want to occupy the space the frame legs already occupy. Not a good combination. Probably a better swap for a C body. Anyway, I finally went with an aftermarket Dakota crossmember but even installing that is a LOT of work but the fit is way better.

The Dak swap was to lose the torsion bars, I guess. What else?? (Danger of running off topic here....)

I don't get it. What is so inferior about the torsion bar suspension on A and F bodies? I have always like the durability and simplicity of the designs. I certainly can't see the point of going into a technical and expensive swap to get rid of it.

In my case, it's weight. A big block in an F-body is pretty nose heavy and turned my car into an ill-handling pig. Since FMJ's really don't command a premium price, I figure I can afford to experiment (without killing myself).

Will it really save that much weight to graft on the Crown Vic suspension?

Speaking of ill-handling pig, have you actually driven a worn out ex-police/taxi CV? These things are deplorable at best and more than likely need a new everything to be useful, including the 'HD' springs.

I don't see it at all, in my world there's there's no advantage over the factory t-bar suspension unless it's absolutely required to clear a mondo oil pan and/or headers.
