Okay, my new to me 74 Dart has inoperable AC and a heater core that was bypassed by the previous owner, who said it was "fogging up the interior. What are my options here? Can I drop the heater/AC box without opening up the AC system, or should i just look for a used A-body AC /heater box and put in a new core before swapping out? I could use a working defroster on these chilly So Cal mornings, and 100-degree weather will be here before I know it.

I don't know how the AC hoses are routed on a '74, but you should be able to remove the heater core without opening the AC system. On my '64 Dart (no AC), I had to open up the heater box in order to remove the heater core, but I didn't have to drop the whole box.

The A/C was already disconnected on the one I did, but I think I would have had to. It was quite a chore. I do know I had to disassemble the whole heater box, more so than on a non A/C car. And the firewall is cut different, so swapping the heater box isn't an option... Sorry if that wasn't much help.
