Post subject:  Tell us about your 200R4 practical driving experiences

I guess the other Wilcap to SL6 thread should be dedicated to tech issues. I start this thread to get some feedback form those of you that have any practical driving impressions with the 200R4 behind a SL6, street or race. Anyone?

No one has done the swap yet, to my knowledge. I won't get to mine for at least another 10-11 mo.

The adapter should mount just about any GM automatic transmission shouldn't it?

Correct. You should be able to run 700-R4, TH 350/400, 4L60E, 200-4R... Apparently there some some "weird" 200-4R bolt patterns in some cases, bust most were/are std GM pattern.

Maybe it should be phrased as the Chevy small block bolt pattern since that will keep some owners from procuring a BOP THM (the pattern is a little different on the THM400 behind a 455 Buick/Olds/Pontiac, Chevy 409, etc..), and also precludes most Cadillac patterns....but this should give a wide range of trannies consideing that the THM 250/200R4 for the 250 6-cyl/4.3V-6 is pretty common up to the modern chevy OD trannies since they are all small blocks now and the "other" GM makes are using that pattern as part of standardizing due to the bean counters manufacturing cut backs.

My apprentice a decade back was a GM guy and the THM 350 is a pretty good tranny but he did stand by the 700R4 as being a quicker shifter but a little lighter duty (but we aren't putting a Tilley engine in front of it, right?).

That is the reason for this thread, my understanding is that the 200R4 should be equally good behind a stock engine, as well as a good replacement for Tilley's old pushbutton 904! I know there are cars with 1000+ hp that have used modified 200R4s with great success, but at that level I would guess the price for a conversion will be a negative factor for most slantsix racers.

I want practical stories about what makes the 200R4 a positive experience on the street and on the track, impressions from the flexible lock-up function, possibly an improved fuel economy, driveability impressions, any negative issues, and so on. Our cars are slowly entering what could be called their 'mature' age, and the question of whether a conversion like this is worth it, is probably a real issue for many.

I predict that akbmotorsports will be the first to get one running. Then we'll learn some new things...

The GN guys get 200R4's to hold up fairly well, but you do have to install a bushel basket full of $100 bills.

Most simply go to a T400.

If someone here can do 1000+ HP with a Slant 6, I'll buy you a transmission...

It has to at least make one 1/4 mile pass at a Slant 6 race. Actually, if you run faster than 9.000 sec, then I'll buy you the 200-4R transmission. That would not require 1000 HP unless in a heavy car.

I'd say Will has the best shot unless I can talk Ryan into putting his motor in the Daytona.

Don't really think I'll be putting much effort into winning a 200R4. I'd be happier to just have a running car.
