| Post subject: | HELP.. head gasket? |
I have a 1964 valiant with a 170 in it. I got a ton of water in my oil. I hadn'tany problems before this event. I thought head gasket, I pulled the head and had it looked at. It was good other than being about.005 out. I had it resurfaced to acceptable now. I have been told the block maybe bad???? anyone else have this happen. It had a steel shim head gasket in it when I took it apart. It happening in the end of summer last year. Never froze the block. Help....lol |

Need more input..... How much is a ton of oil? Several quarts? or just a residual amount from taking the head off? How long was the head off? months/years? and where was the engine stored? Is the oil white? very milky? or just a little.... How long have you run the engine? long enough to clear up any residual water? How many times have you changed the oil after the rebuild. |

| Post subject: | Check the deck... |
You will need a known good straight edge to check the motor deck (a 24" machinists edge is perfect), see what kind of feeler gauge you can slide under it at various points on the block under the edge. (Between cylinders, on the mating surfaces). That will tell you if the deck is "off". I have pulled apart a couple 225's with shim gaskets and found the deck to be a little lax in a couple areas...no problems for me since they were being decked for more compression, but might be problematic if it was a head swap in the car.... -D.Idiot |

I got an extra head gasket for your engine for $10 plus shipping if you need it. |

It's water/coolant in my oil. I've had head gaskets crap before and experienced cracks in the blocks. This hasn't been characteristic of those problems. I have heard that the shim gaskets can be very touchy. and I've heard that there may have been issue with the rear portion of that block? aka bolt going near water jacket and leaking into oil galley. So I'm not sure? So I hope to get input here or at least things to check. I guess I'm having a hard time thinking that I have a interior block crack. I've looked very close at all I can see and no tell-tail signs anywhere.... I was almost thinking a fiber reinforced head gasket is needed? It's the wife's cruiser and she really likes it. It's a totally stock survivor and people run it down on the street all the time and tell storys of Grandpas and uncles that had the same car!! Lat year Sue took it to MSRAS Back to the fiftys and it passed the safety inspection with flying colors!!! The 23-point NSRA Safety one.... Thanks for any and all help... |

Opp's We drove it until it quit running. The motor took on to much coolant in crankcase. I just have never experienced it happen like this? |
