| Post subject: | Front Lug Stud Removal |
I need to replace 2 lug studs on the front driver side, but cant figure out how to get them off the drum. Please help |

(1) Remove drum (2) place drum on floor with lug studs pointed up (3) get a big hammer (4) beat on the studs you want removed until they give up and fall out of the drum The is just something primally satisfying about beating lug nuts out of a drum. After i get them out I always feel like jumping around the garage like and ape and hooting. Hitting things with a big hammer is just really satisfying I guess. To install new studs properly you will need a press. |

If you do that, there is a very good chance you will ruin the hub. The studs are swedged after they are installed, and you need to remove the swedging before beating the studs out. Otherwise the swedged area of the stud will enlarge the hole in the hub, and the new studs will not fit properly.

Well, see why the Neanderthals went extinct? Indiscriminately beating on things with a hammer is a bad idea! Sounds like the preferred method from Charlie would be to use a grinder to grind the heads of the studs down past the swedges and then bang them out. So, it sounds like you need a floor, a grinder, and a hammer. |

The swedge is on the side of the stud that has the threads. Back in the old days most shops had a special tool to remove the swedging. That tool is no longer available (mine has been missing for years, also). I did contact the company that made the tool, and they would make them again, on special order, at a price that I didn't think was worth it. (Minimum qty required). The tool looked like a "counter bore" with a hole in the center, that went down over the stud, and the cutting end would remove the swedge. then the studs could be driven out. I usually use a cutoff wheel, or grinding wheel, to remove the swedge, then drive out the stud. It thakes a while. PS: I don't reswedge the new studs.
