Hi, I am getting my slant cleaned up a bit and noticed this casting defect in the block, does anyone know if its just a void or if its a cold shut? Its on the expansion plug side of the motor behind where the water pump mounts. It is the original block that I pulled out, so its been around the clock a couple of times which leads me to think its prob fine but... Is this block basically a throw away or should it be ok? Cheers

No water down that low, but that is interesting, wonder how the rest of the block is.  Richard |

The rest of the block looks pretty clean (to my inexpert eye). Here's another pic showing the location better.

in the foundry casting process resin bonded sand cores are used to form the hollow areas: water jacket, crank area, cylinder bores. to improve the surface smoothness and to limit the molten iron from penetrating between the sand grains as the resin burns out, a water based refractory (core wash) is applied, usually by dipping the core into the liquid bath of core wash then using a light air pressure to blow off the excess, the cores are then transfer into an over to evaporate the water from the core wash. What you are seeing is the trace of a run in the core wash, probably from the air blow off operation, that remained on the core after the wash dried and consequently was transfered to the casting. |
