A long time ago I upgraded to a 22" champion radiator. I have also installed air conditioning and I think my 4 blade fan is just simply not up to the task of cooling. I was doing 70 down the free way with the air on full blast I saw the temp edging towards hot so I backed it down to 2 out of 3 positions and the temp came back down. So I am thinking I am going to install 2 electric fans my question is how do I activate them by temp? I do not have a bung on the aluminum radiator. |

If you're running at 70, having fans running isn't going to help much, anyway. Have you had this issue at low speed? Also, what's the vehicle? I can tell you from experience that a 65 or under A body won't allow much in the way of sizable fans. |

I have not had this issue at low speed. I was coming back from Atlanta towards Birmingham and there are quite a few hills along the trip. I have had a small exhaust leak at the exhaust pipe to manifold connection. I am thinking it may have had something to do with the temp rising. I was able to get another 1/4 turn which I hope closed the space. If not is there any kind of sealant I can put there? |

The exhaust thing is unrelated, I'd think. To fix it, you should just get a new gasket (Remflex are good, but regular ones are at any parts place). That area is waaaayyy too hot for sealant. With a decent gasket, you're good to go. I suspect you're talking about the Barracuda, right? I can tell you the best you can fit will be either 2 - 9" fans or (like me) a 9 and a 10. |

I only bring it up because I know our bays tend to be kind of closed and if the exhaust gas built up it may heat the bay. So any thoughts as to what it may be? Timing is good. Water pump is new and not leaking. Engine is freshly rebuilt so there is no blockage. It is a 2 row champion there is about 1/2 in between the fan and the radiator and the reaches edge to edge. |

Factory AC slants got a seven bladed fan and a fan shroud. A fan shroud is an upgrade worth looking into. |

Reed's got the golden answer here, I think. A shroud will definitely be huge for this situation. |

I have a shroud but I could never get it fit as is so I guess it's time to trim it to fit. |

Unfortunately, I've found that when it comes to these early A bodies and the cooling system, it's all "trim to fit"! ![]() Good luck! |

Is it a factory shroud for this application or a generic aftermarket?

Generic aftermarket I don't think I can use a factory shroud because I have upgraded the radiator. |

How long ago, and how hard is your water? You might have some tubes blocked with rust, calcium, etc. I've spotted blocked tubes in radiators with a thermal imager, but not everyone has access to one of those. ![]() Quote: I was doing 70 down the free way with the air on full blast I saw the temp edging towards hot so I backed it down to 2 out of 3 positions and the temp came back down.
Fan issues are more common at low speeds. Quote: So I am thinking I am going to install 2 electric fans my question is how do I activate them by temp? I do not have a bung on the aluminum radiator.
I spliced one of these Inline Fill Adapters into the lower hose.![]() I use the Aggressive Ted's schematic and the switch described HERE |

what revs is your engine doing at 70mph? you said you got a new water pump - are any hoses coming off the pump to the heater box or anything like that? is it drilled for water to pass through to the heater hose? what type of impeller/blades does th efan have - are they open or are they closed? the open ones tend to be a bit dodgy at higher revs. are you having thermostat issues, is it the correct heat range for a AC equipped car? is it opening as expected? you can test it easy with boiling water in a pot and a thermometer and see if it flaps open. or just get a new one for the sake of a few bucks. and i too highly recommend a fan shroud. |
