Blower guys running crank hubs: Do you miss your balancer, or its effects on harmonics? Does a lo-po slant even NEED a rubber balancer? Question pertained to a trigger wheel I built on the ring of a stock balancer. Perfectionists told me I will get timing issues as the ring oscillates and will either throw the clearance off the VR sensor (.75-1mm needed) or effect timing by a degree or 2. Would just welding it solid kill my crank? or will the alt/pump belt absorb the harmonics line a blower belt does? 5500 max RPM, 200-250 HP max. thanks!

Many other high output inline brands(Ford,Chevy mostly) don't even use balancers/dampers on race engines, just solid hubs. And they're met with varying success. Just keep in mind, when they fail, they fail big time! The outer ring on your damper looks good, but as discovered will cause problematic and erratic issues with providing accurate and consistent sensor tooth location, especially if it gets into the RPM zone where harmonic shaking can also occur. That's one reason for the most part that all apps that use a reluctor wheel have them attached to the crankshaft as a solid assembly, like actually cut into a crank counterweight, or around the OD of a flywheel/flexplate and even a balancer, but attached to the inside hub, not the outer.

That is what i was concerned about. Well, i guess ill report back on the success or failure of this design. MS has a cool live "O-scope" mode that will show me the timing variances at speed so it should prove interesting.

It looks good though, you should at least try it out since you've already gotten to this point. It might not be optimal in design, but it would still work to some degree. I wouldn't make the balancer rigid though. You'd just be introducing another issue that you don't have at this point.

I would not run a motor w/o a damper personally, but who knows? I would try your outer ring toothed wheel and see if it works, at least. My bet is it will work fine if you get the gap optimized.
