Post subject: | RHD headers modified to fit LHD car? |
well as some of you may know i recently picked up a set of genie headers, extractors, whatever from a bloke in Australia. little did i know they were right hand drive specific and when i contacted genie i was met with a "please do not waste your time as they will not fit at all" response. i sort of mocked them up on the motor, laid them across the top to be truthful, and they look like they're close.. not a direct fit; but seeming possible with some cutting bending and welding. has anyone ever come across this problem? any one ever modify a set of headers to fit the leaning tower of power on this side of the pond? i do realize headers are a short sighted idea, no provisions for the heat riser, poor cold weather drivability, they rust out in time, dutra duels are much easier, all around better, and support the slant six community but i'm saving that as a last result. I already have the headers and being in NY i'm reluctant to sent them back overseas where they will work or flip them to someone who stands to run into the same problem as me around here. worst comes to worst ill have cut up a set of unusable headers, learned a lesson, and got to practice my welding. plus, it would drive me crazy to see someone else having my fun and its all the more reason to buy another car with a six incase it does work for a rock solid daily driver that i can slap some dutras on. any advice or experience would help. i'm reluctant to jump in head first eyes closed but when cut comes to weld you've gotta do what you've gotta do. that or go back to stock... whatever[/img] |

What are they going in? Looks to me like the front one will run right into the steering box on an A body. |

Haha. Seemingly that'll be easier than making this exhaust work for me. I was thinking cut the rear collector off at the single pipe and work with the two halves seperately. Maybe try and cut at a portion relatively straight on each side of the bend and extend it around the steering box if that's feasible.. or shorten it to clear its going into a 73 plymouth scamp. i know the clearance issue will be with the steering box but i wont know how severe until i pull the old stuff out and start mocking this stuff up |

They're listed on craigslist for 300 right now but shipping stands to be in the arm and leg category since its a 5 foot long piece of metal |

They'll be a hard sell in the US for that, since they are only a bolt on for RHD cars. The alternative for the US market is about the same, but you don't have to modify them up to try to make them fit. Plus you'll compromise the design if you alter the tube lengths on any of them trying to make them fit your car. |

Yeah I realize but I don't feel like having to go through the hasle of shipping them over seas again.. to get to me it was a 5 month trip by sea mail. And its true about the flow differences but maybe I can try and lengthen all of them.. maybe just add onto the rear as nessesary.. its the principle of it at this point. I just want to see them in my car |

I don't think the Aussie headers have flanges on them to bolt exhaust to either do they. |

Its doable, but there's going to be some work involved, especially with having to make and add flanges also. There is a similar part that the Chevy inline 6 guys use that is made in Brazil. Its made to fit the cars they have there and not for the US market of cars, but they still buy them even after 100's of posts telling them it wont fit our cars here. Yours is a little easier of a fix though, but still a pretty good bit of work. |
