Use the Nippendenso alternator from a (either, not sure which) 88 or 89 dakota with a V belt pulley. Cut about a 1/4 inch off the front of the alt mounting bracket. Done.

No. It looks like this. They came with either a 2 shive v-belt pully, which is what you need, or a multi groove pully for a serp belt.

Since the ND alternator is higher output, I'd assume the factory wiring needs to be upgraded??

Yes, I did the SL6 Dan wiring mod with two 10 gauge wires and circuit breakers.

why would one go with a higher output alternator in general for a non option car

had mine tested @ advanced auto
it was OK

bought a regulator on the 9th and it arrived on the 12th and it charges great..
cheap/new

Improved charging at idle, smaller form factor.

Smaller form factor! HA!
Just be glad you ain't got one of the original Mopar 100 amp units! Like my NYB, bulletproof, but man are they big.
I think I do remember seeing them on some slants, maybe fleet use?

I once pulled a 100 amp alternator and the associated brackets and wiring harness off of a 83 Dodge van powered by a slant six. It was in the junkyard and had the 100 amp alternator to provide power for the rear window defrost grid. If memory serves, that grid alone draw 35 amps. I imagine that any fleet vehicles or vehicle that had the rear defog grid would have needed at the very least the 65 amp alternator, if not all the way up to the 100 amp. I recall having seen late 70s slant powered LeBarons with the 100 amp alternator as well.

Canadian spec Mopars got the defrost grid as standard from about 78, like my NYB. So that makes sense!

(1) cost
(2) chromed metal does not cool as well as natural finish metal
(3) I prefer externally regulated alternators for purposes of repair
