Rewiring. Where to start??

Post subject:  Rewiring. Where to start??
I had hoped to have the truck running by now, but as I have started to pull things apart I have noticed some very shaking wiring done by some previous owners. Splices, patches, mismatched colors, its a mess. Since this will be my daughters daily driver it needs to be reliable.

So I have to rewire. But I also don't want to have to buy a painless kit.

Here are my immediate plans:
Change to HEI
Headlights on relays
Bypass amp-meter

I would like to add a power distribution panel under the hood. Can I just grab one out of a car/truck at the bone yard? If so are there any recommendations?

Any pointers about cleaning up the wiring under the hood would be greatly appreciated.

Un-plug the engine harness and do that one first.....then do the others since they are add on.

Take your time and replace each wire and connector one at a time. It goes pretty quick even if you crimp and then solder each crimp. That was the most important step I did for my car. In fact it was pretty fun working with the new connectors and clean colorful wires. Mine had burn't and shorted in many places. No wonder the gauges read weird....

Thanks for the replies.

Olaf - I have used the search and was just a little overwhelmed with the options available. Thanks for the link. Great place to start.

I have been looking at various power block option and came across this:

A couple different options. They support mini & micro relays so I could put my headlights and future electronic fan in there are well.

Also like that they have all the terminals etc.

Now I just need to find a supplier for automotive wire that doesn't require purchasing 250' rolls for each color

Any NAPA Auto parts.....
That is where I bought my wire in 10' and 25' coils.
You can also pick up the stock connectors from them too!

I purchased most of the brass connectors, and plastic housings here. They also have wire, and all the relays you may need.

I think a lot of fuse blocks/boxes of both sensible design and price, is to be found at your local wrecker's site. In one thread here, there were pics of a seemingly good Ford Taurus fusebox, complete with a relay bank. My advice is to get something with a lot of cables connected, and just start wiring! That way you soon see what you really want and need, and can start planning for your next attempt to make it absolutely perfect! :D

I am fortunate to have a couple of complete harnesses for '78/79 F-bodies, so I can mix and match and reuse whatever I think serves the purpose, as well as make new what I think fits my setup better. As an example, I want intermittent wipers from a '78 in my '77, and I can use the dash panel, wiper motor and all the wiring needed for the swap, pulled form the extra harnesses, with stock color codes, but I will power it using my new setup.

Take your time , think ahead, make some sketches and mark your wires, and you'll end up satisfied!

All good advice. Two of the great weaknesses in the stock design are the bulkhead connector and the ammeter. It would be huge if someone came up with a way to waterfroof this one, or a flexible aftermarket one that was.

Whatever you do, keep good records. You WILL forget later. I did. There are two wires on one of my fuse boxes that are unmarked, and now unknown. :cry:
