I use an oil filter
Put it in there because rust from the gas tank was clogging up the normal filter when I first got the car. (which is why there's a fuel pressure gauge in-line)
I'm on my second filter now.......

what's a good hi flow / filtered /clear in line fuel filter for under the hood use/ glass ? plastic? our fuel line goes down the valve cover to 4 barrel carb from front of engine (stock location) |

My opinion, NONE. Either one is prone to breakage or melting. Use a metal filter.

I use a metal canister style filter that functions as a fuel water separator that filters down to 2 microns. It has been a blessing over the last 10 years or so.... Click on the link below to view brand and mounting photos. Jeg's and Summit carry them as well as our local auto parts in Black Diamond. Also most Marina's carry them. |

how many microns should I use? most seem 9 microns with a good flow volume thanks Mary and USAJon. |

I tried 9 and 10 micron filters and they let a lot of fine debris in the carb.....after awhile it looks like sludge which can still block the power valve or a jet. I use a 2 Micron filter, "Perma-Cool" that came from Jeg's....Summit sells them too, so does our local marina and auto parts. click on the redlink to view pictures of the brand and part number. After installing it I have not gotten any sludge (fine particle build up) in the past 6 years. No water in the carb either.... It has been excellent!

I use a marine fuel filter/water sparator from Parker Hannifin, but mine is designed to sit on the suction side, unlike Ted's which is used on the pressure side of he fuel pump. Be aware of that difference when buying the canister type fuel filter. Olaf |

I use a clear fuel filter, but the clear piece is Pyrex (Duran), a type of High Temp glass. I have used them for years on motorcycles and never broken one. You can buy cheap glass copies at most any autoparts store.(and the ends are the same, but the glass is not) |

I tried that version for about a year and it still let a lot of crap into the carb. The marine and diesel filters are far better. |

Ted- Down to 2 microns? yes, that is alot better! I replaced the entire fuel system(tank and everything to the carb.), so the only crap I have seen is probably coming from the stations pump!  I really like the idea of the moisture seperator! Maybe in the future?

2 microns is important on Diesel engines......and sure helps with our old carbs. If you can keep the fine sludge and water out of the fuel the ethanol mix can't kill the carb. I have seen a few marine and auto carbs that didn't use the fuel water separators. The carbs were eaten alive! and had to be replaced. My little Holley 1920 looks brand new inside after all these years. |

Carquest used to sell a fitting, and spin on filter with a water petcock drain on the bottom. I used it on an old Ford van that had a few holes in the tank. |
