great running lightly modified Dart with Carter 2bbl carb. suddenly today it started stumbling while coming off a traffic light. Car behaved poorly off the lights for approx a half hour today. It has never done this before. Kind of like a lean surge, you have to pump the pedal before it clears up. The car greats great economy> the motor is about 3 yrs old. A few months ago I had the Carter carb restored again. The fuel pump is almost 8 yrs old. Could it be a failing fuel pump? If so, which one should I get as a replacement ?

Sounds like your accelerator pump shot maybe weak and or some water has collected in the bottom of the float bowl. Run a few gas tanks of "Heet" (yellow bottle) through your engine. My carb did the same thing on Saturday, the last day of summer.....the air temp around here dropped 35 degrees.

Would lightly modified encompass headers?

this morning after sitting overnite the car did NOT start instantly.
I looked down into Carter carb 2bbl> and there was no pump shot while activating the throttle. Poured fuel down inside, and it started right up. While running, there was no pump shot when opening throttle.

Thoughts.......
The gas can boil/evaporate during heat soak after shut off.
If you install a fuel pressure gauge in front of the carb you can see what the fuel pump is putting out...and or if your fuel filter is clogged. Did you do SL6 Dan's fuel line mod?

Click on the red link for pictures...of filter, fuel pressure gauge and fuel line mod.

If yes, your carb may need to be cleaned out and/or a rebuild...

my phx carb expert called me back, and just said> take it off and bring it back in. todays modern fuels melt the accel pump into the bore all the time, and its costing him time and money to fix these now common problems. SO Im off to the carb racing shop again.

for everyones info> modern fuels are melting accel pump plungers into the bore. that's why old timer carb repair guys still have lots of business. My Carter BBD on the mighty slant lasted just 9 mo and about 6 thou miles, before instantly changing from perfect running to a total pig.
FYI to all.

Sounds like a fluke to me, I've daily driven my car for years street/strip never had a leak or melt issue in the pump shot diaphragm. If your not getting a pump shot with linkage movement then that's your off light stumble! Not a biggy fix it up
