Post subject:  Truck wont start
:( I took the instrument cluster out of my 87 D100 and replaced the bulbs to make the dash lights brighter.I drove it to the parts store and some other erands with the cluster removed and didn't have any problems.Once I got home I installed the new bulbs and reconnected the wires and checked them for brightness.I decided to try and ground the circuit board better so I disconnected the wires again.While I was out looking around the garage for some wire I noticed the new headlights I had been planning to install and decided it would only take a couple minutes.I needed to back the truck up a little to give me room to work on it.I bumped the ignition switch a couple times with it in reverse.After finishing one head light it was getting late and cold so I quit for the night.When I went out this morning and tried to start it the starter wouldn't work.When I turn the key to ON I can hear a click but when I turn it to start nothing happens.I have checked and rechecked all the connections several times.All of the electrical items(Lights,wiper,horn,ect) work except for the blower for the heater.If I push the buttons on the heater control I can hear the A/C compressor click on and off.I have checked the heater/A/C fuse and it looks good.This has got me baffled!
Any help will greatly appreciated!

The battery is holding a charge and everything works except the blower motor and the starter wont make a sound when I turn the key to Start but I do hear a click when I turn the key to the ON position.When I turn the key to the ON position the AMP guage shows just a slight discharge and does't move when I turn it to Start.

Post subject:  a quick test...
Leave the key in the On position but not cranking, then go to your starter relay under the hood. Get a screwdriver, and short out the two biggest studs... the starter should start going. If it does, the problem is in back of the relay... if it doesn't check wiring to the starter and/or try swapping starter with a spare

:cry: Haven't done much to the truck for the past couple days as I caught the "crud" thats going around.I drug out last night and rechecked the wireing connections down to the firewall and all looked ok.
My question is what would cause the blower motor and starter to both quit at the same time when every thing else works?

I dont know if this will help, but the same thing happened to my 77 truck. It turned out to be the volt meter. Unless they changed this almost all electric power goes through the meter. Good luck and happy hunting.

A '77 truck didn't have a volt meter, they still used an amp gauge.

:? I went out today and checked the wiring again and all checked out ok.I shorted the termanals on the starter relay and the starter cranked.I checked the wires on the connector from the ignition switch and it has power to most of them except the yellow one which goes to the starter relay and a black one with brown or dark red stripes.The yellow one didn't have power going through even when I turned the key to the start position.I'm guessing now that the switch is bad.Nothing works in the accessory position.Is it possible for the switch to go out suddenly like this or do you think I may have pulled a wire loose to it somehow?I need to pull the steering wheel anyway to replace a bad turn signal switch.

At this point it could be machanical damage or a short, you are doing the right thing by checking with a volt meter and jumping around things to isolate the problem.

If the yellow wire from the ign switch does not have power when the key is in the start/crank position the switch is bad. (The yellow wire activates the starter relay)

:D I jumped all the fusable links and the truck fired right up! Thanks for everyones input.
