Post subject:  '66 Dart, factory carb?

Hello all!

I just picked up a 66 Dart 225/904,and I have an issue. The carb that is on there now is a re-(not so)manufacutured holley 1920.

My issue is this: The kickdown is not hooked up,and can not be hooked up to this carb. The throttle is very much jury rigged,so my thoughts are its just the wrong carb for this application. It appears to have an intake from a later model 225 because it has an egr/egr block off.

What are my options here? Also while the kickdown is not hooked up should I be manually shifting it? I know its not good to not have it hooked up,but I don't have any other options at the moment($$$)

Thank you for any insight.

PS I do not have a camera or camera phone, but I will borrow my brothers tomorrow and snap a picture so y'all can see what I am talking about.

Howdy, neighbor. Welcome to /6ville!

Yes, you really should get the kickdown fixed. Maybe I can help.

In the meantime, get under the car and find the throttle lever on the transmission. Wire that lever about half way or a bit more back and keep your foot out of the carb!

I found a complete Factory Service Manual for '66 Dart & Coronet online. Lotsa good info on what you're supposed to have.
That's always a good starting point for fabricating/modifying.

I'm running a carter BBS like the terribly abused one that came on the AZDart, and haven't really dug into the Holley 1920 and its linkage. This is from the fuel section of the FSM:
Quote:
GENERAL INFORMATlON

The Standard Holley carburetor models R-3271A and R-3279A are used on the 225 cu. in. engine, when the vehicles are equipped with a manual transmission.

R-3275A is used as above but with air conditioning.

R-3272A and R-3280A are used on the 225 cu. in. engine, when the vehicles are equipped with an automatic transmission.

R-3276A is used as above but with air conditioning.

R-3273A and R-3281A are used on the 225 cu. in. engine, when the vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission.

R-3277A is used as above but with air conditioning.

R-3274A and R-3282A are used on the 225 cu. in. engine, when the vehicles are equipped with an automatic transmission.
The A/C cars used cable throttle operation. Non A/C cars still had the old style "twisty" throttle linkage. The mechanical difference is the configuration of the throttle lever.
Both used rods down to the tranny kickdown lever.

Here are a couple of pics from the transmission section of the FSM.

Click on the pics for larger images. I hope that helps a bit.

That helps a lot! My car is an a/c car, with a cable actuated throttle. The carb I have is for the rod actuated throttle. Thank you so much BC!

Always happy to help!

Anyone out there have a 1920 with the cable style throttle lever??

You might try an ad in the parts wanted column of this forum, and/or FABO. They're both free - nothing to lose!

I put one up to see if someone wants to swap. If not i'll just have to wait until I start working again, and buy one. Thank you again for all the help, it is very much appreciated!

I have most of a twist throttle setup if you have the room to make it work.

I'm not sure, why did a/c cars get a cable? Is the a/c box in the way? I've never owned a car with the rod actuated throttle, so this is a new challenge for me. Thank you for your help though! Maybe someone will chime in with more knowledge than me.
