My Slant doesn't have a bracket from the engine to the tranny, but I've seen these elsewhere. Mine is an A-904 automatic, should it have the support bracket? |

do I even need this bracket? I definitely have seen them on the manual transmission cars, but mine is automatic. Anyone care to opine on this? thanks, BG |

Yes, you need that bracket. Once upon a time I had a 74 Valiant that I swapped motors in. I either installed the bolts for that brace loosely or I forgot to put it on. A few weeks later I sold the car to a friend of mine. Several weeks after that he called me and complained that the transmission had been making funny noises, quit working on the highway, and when he got it pull off the highway and into a side street was leaking transmission fluid everywhere. I ended up taking the Valiant back from him. Upon inspection I discovered the missing brace and I also discovered that the bellhousing on the 904 had actually broken away from the main body on the transmission. Pretty impressive. My suspicion is that the missing brace lead to vibrations, flex, and stress between the engine and the transmission which ultimately caused a catastrophic transmission case failure. So, the long and the short of it is that you absolutely need that brace. Chrysler wouldn't have put it there if you didn't. |

Luckily the bracket for the automatic is the easiest to get, manual transmission ears are different and not common anymore. If your engine is more that a mild street engine I will suggest that you threadlocker the two bolts on the engine block. I have personally loosened these up from hardcore high compression clutch dumps (plenty of flex in that area), and have had to tighten the bolts back up (first time I was driving along wondering why I had a rattle under the hood but didn't notice the plate was loose...3 days later I checked the oil and noticed the bolts were backed out 3/8"..."). -D.Idiot |
