I finally got around to getting a Nippondenso alternator for my car and found an old Bell Canada van (early A100?) that still had an alternator. I thought I might as well grab it because someone might be able to use a left-hand alternator bracket. I was looking for a 90A or 120A alternator but the junk yard only had an 80A Denso alternator, which they said was still in working condition. The van had a left side alternator bracket and the alternator mounts inside of the stamped steel. Unfortunately, it is still too narrow to mount the 80A Denso or the 100A alternator from my 78 New Yorker. I see in the left-hand alternator bracket topic that the 1960 generator mount is much wider than my alternator bracket. I got to thinking that I could probably fabricate a suitable left-side bracket from channel instead. I'm not sure about alternator dimensions. Eyeballing the centre of the pulley to the front mount of the alternator, it looks like the old single-field , the 100A, and the 80A Denso alternators are all about 1". Is this a standard dimension? I know DusterIdiot has AndyF's custom bracket design but there isn't enough call for a production run. Has anyone else fabricated alternator brackets? |

I must have missed that topic. Thanks! If I wanted to use a standard alternator, the reversed PS bracket is a great idea. However, it won't work on my 100A alternator and would probably need more modification for the Denso alternator. |

I think Lou and some others have fabbed up an aluminum bracket that bolts into the same location as the P/S. They just used a piece of heavy wall aluminum channel (maybe 3" or so) and then bolted it up and used spacer to get it where they wanted it. I have some pieces in my garage to do the same thing, so I can move my alternator lower and go to the smaller Denso unit Rick |

Andy's Bracket is a 12 gauge piece of black iron that was laser cut for the bolt pattern on the block and bent to the width needed for the alternator. I would at minimum use .125 Aluminum or better if going that route. It's not too hard to pattern the bracket onto cardboard then weld something up from channel or a couple pieces of angle. My only change since I race and have thrown the fan belt on launch would be to retain the A/C rear pulley to drive the alternator vs. the forward PS pulley, so if the belt is thrown it will just dangle off the damper hub instead of slipping off the track and getting chewed up in the fan.
