Post subject:  front u joint lube

as the name implies, i have a 75 valiant. totally stock, 4 door california car. when i had the driveline out of the car, i found it was totally impossible to lube the front u-joint. yes, it had a zirc. it was just too tight of a fit to get ANY grease gun tip in there. i gave up and re-installed because i had to use the car.

so what gives? did they use special skinny tips back in the 70s? i can't believe mopar intended for me to disassemble the u joint to grease it while having a zirc in there.

help is appreciated.

Here is the very tight space attachment I used in the seventies for greasing U Joints, they are still available:

I have had to remove drive shaft at times to get good grease application to front joint due to duel exhaust system cluttering up access to front joint.

VERY few factory automotive U-joints (60's-70's & up) came with zerk fittings- so it's likely a replacement- which means it was installed with the fitting poing the wrong way. I still use the same grease adapter as wjar when needed. There's an even slimmer version- it has a needle about 1/8" thick & a conical tip. You push the tip against the check ball & pump grease in. On a 7260 joint you will almost always need an extension like the one pictured above. I have one that is thinner than that. You can usually find them at Poop Boys or Otterzone.

Just recently, I saw a blurb about a device for forcing lube into a clogged zerk fitting. You use a hammer with it and it blasts the old junk out. I just can't find it just now.
