Post subject:  Super Six in need of a carb.

Well, just when you think things are going your way....
Saturday, I got the Super Six intake and exhaust I have been eyeing for a couple of weeks. I took the Carter BBD off during the removal and was sorely disappointed. The hood had been left up for quite some time and rain has gotten into the carburetor. It was all rusted and corroded, completely destroyed! I took the manifolds and left the carb and air cleaner behind.

This brings me to my question. What can I do now for a carburetor? What is available now that will fit the two barrel intake? Any suggestions on make and model for some decent choices? I would like to get a little performance out of it, but fuel economy is still a factor.

Also, the exhaust manifold had a few small cracks. Is it possible to have a welding shop weld cast iron? Is it worth the trouble? My original manifold doesn't appear to have any cracks, but it's heat control valve has a couple of problems I would have to work through (broken pins for the thermostat spring and silencer spring). What's the potential problems for just capping off the heat riser opening with a solid plate and forget about repairing it? I live in central Texas, so the temps aren't really that bad in the winter.

Appreciate any and all comments,
Jerry

I'd just scrub away at the one ya got, but if its totally gone, a Holley 2280, or Carter BBD from any engine will bolt right up :)

There are some large venturi BBD's from the 60's that were found on big block 2 barrel options. I have one from a 1967 440 powered Dodge Dump Truck, and it's as big as the Stromberg I have from a 1967 383-2V Newport...

Just grab a BBD from any 318 and you'll be OK, try to find ones without the hole in the throttle plates, it'll make life easier on fairly 'stock' slants. If that's not possible the Holley 2280 would be the next choice....

happy hunting,

As noted above, you have lots of options with the carb.
A new Holley 2280 would be the "first class" way to get this going. If that is too expensive, get a BBD off whatever you can find and rebuild that.

On the exhaust manifold, do not waste any time on welding cracks, just get a replacement manifold. Be sure it is a Super Six exhaust manifold with the "no rear wall" choke stove pocket.

No clue if you can get a "New" Holley 2280, but i wouldnt want to know the price if you could, a rebuilt Carter BBD costs $220CDN  but just be forwarned, you can get just as good of gasmilage with a BBD and have alot more performance to boot, Those 2280's are like the 1bbl for performance, but the gas milage is great!

Thans again Justin

I have no experience for 2280, but many have mentioned at this forum, that it's better than Carter.
