Post subject:  timing ? mine is zero............................

so, I know this anit right......did a search and it said 12 degrees/ another search said 5 degrees..
bf tdc
stock old never change oil , 1969 engine

now supe oil trying 2have some fun.
750 eddie on Clifford intake 6=8
with hooker headers the nice long ones..

yes old engine as I purchased man never changed oil/oil build up in valve cover/I know you have observed this/now has cliffords intake w/750 eddie and timing set at zero....

I would set it at 10 BTDC and use a vaccum gauge to see if it could take a little more.
THEN... check to see how much total advance the engine is getting. (target 30 degrees total)

If it starts, runs well and pulls top vacuum at 10 BTDC but over-advances at high RPM... then recurve the distributor to reduce the total.

DOC u kinda went above me.
where do I find a vac gauge
I am using a old school craftsman timing light
I went to adj the dist and the bolt was lose.
I timed it @ 15
the idle went up from 800 rpm to 1000/ no ping/no 750 carb bog either/ I adj the cab idle screw to 900 idle. will run 4a while 2c if over heat

so whats with the vac test how 2 ?

Instructions on how to recurve the distributor have been given many times on this board. There is even a sticky in the engine faq. Here, in case you can't find it: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46266 Be sure to search the site for other discussions about distributor recurving. Just search for recurve.

You can purchase a vacuum gauge at any decent parts store, or even a well stocked grocery store. How to use and interpret a vacuum gauge.

Yeah, i know now that if your not going very far, very fast! You might have a clogged cat...the exhaust manifold ran hotter and exhaust gases were backing up into the motor

That one on ebay looks fine, if a bit over complicated. I bought my hand held vacuum gauge about 20 years ago at Napa (boy, now I really feel old). It has stood up fine to years of use and abuse. It is simple to read and as far as I can tell still accurate.

OK, so I have my timing set at 5deg BTDC, and my total advance is at about 30 deg. So, if I'm recurving my dizzy to provide 20 deg advance, does that mean I can bump my timing at 10-12 deg BTDC?

I'll get the vacuum gauge, do as DD suggest first, to see if it'll handle 10-12 BTDC. Then go from there I suppose.

I just want to understand, as it stands the mech and vacuum advance are at 30 degrees total, so if I reduce the mech advance by recurve, then I can set initial advance to more, is that the idea?

The 30° total is Initial + Mechanical. Vacuum added in can be much higher, but will depend on your configuration.
The reason for 30° all in is, at high throttle settings, where vacuum advance will be minimal, exceeding that value can result in detonation.

Both vacuum advance and EGR opening will be minimal at high throttle settings.

Set your timing all in, vacuum disconnected, for your new mechanical curve, then see where your initial timing results. Just don't hold high rpm for prolonged periods. You should be all in before exceeding 3500 rpm. If not, recurve again. You should have most of your mechanical by normal fast cruise rpm. Let the vacuum can do the rest for your cruise timing, which can be as much as mid 50°s.
