Post subject:  HELP! Brake lights went out!

Hey everyone, it's been a while since I've posted here since my slant has been treating me fine.

Well today I was coming home from work and a friendly motorist told me that I had no brake lights at all. The rest of my lights work back there including turn signals. I had noticed a few months ago that when I hit my brake pedal my red and amber lights would come on. I thought it was just how it was supposed to work and never put much thought into it.

So! If anyone could point me in a direction to start looking for an issue, I would really appreciate it. I only just got home so I haven't had time to look through my FSM. I did look at the connections in the trunk and fuses and everything looks fine.

So, any ideas?

Check grounds to all lights in back of car.

Check brake light switch adjustment, and electrical function mounted under steering column.

All lighting circuits to rear of car run through directional signal switch. Sometimes these switches get sloppy after forty years or so, and fail to make contact to complete circuits to tail brake lights.

A quick test of switch: Back car up to a garage door, or wall at night to be able to see when they are working. Place foot on brake look for reflected glow, if none, with foot still on brake pedal gently pull back directional signal lever in direction of steering wheel checking for brake light glow in mirror.

Thanks for the tips. It was the switch by the pedal. What a pain to get under there! Once again this forum has been exactly what I needed!

That is an easy fix.

You need an easy dash access carcass supporter...
