I just changed out the P/S pump on my '72 Scamp. After cycling through lock to lock turns to get the air out, the pump is still whining and the fluid is pretty foamy. Is there any special fluid I need? I heard fluids are getting thinner for modern cars.

To clarify I used new P/S fluid by Napa Auto. I was wondering if there was another brand that worked better on older pumps?

After turning steering wheel stop to stop several times shut off engine and let bubbles coagulate into large air pockets for about an hour or so. Restart engine and repeat turning wheel stop to stop a few times to burp out remaining air.

Another way to purge air is to disconnect return hose and direct its flow into an empty jug, and continue to add fresh fluid until discharge runs air/foam/ & crud free. This method is recommended because it flushes out crap from steering gear, and related plumbing. The last time I did this I used three to four quarts of new fluid to complete the task.
