Post subject:  Ignition
Today i drove my car home from school and got out and went inside. I went back out after 2 hours and got into my car to go get the mail and my key will not even make it half way into the ignition. Ive never even heard of such a thing!. Please help!

It happens on high millage cars where lock cylinder was not lubricated in a timely manner and has reached its cycles to failure. It just wares the pointed end of the pin tumbler flat, and sometimes the leading end of the key develops a notch so when key is inserted into keyway it won’t lift one of the tumblers… Or something has become lodged in keyway such as a short #1 pin or short pin has rotated in its chamber unable to move up & down preventing full insertion of key.


Try pushing a small length of wire into key way to determine if some object is blocking it. If clear, spray some silicone lubricant into key way, and run key in and out until it works without hanging up.


If you find it is a pin mid way in that has rotated in its chamber and become jammed, an easy fix is to remove cylinder, uncap pin chamber, and dump the offending chamber of its spring & worn top & bottom pin, and reassemble.


Or take the ignition cylinder and driver's door lock to a lock smith and have both repined, and new keys cut to factory dimensions. This usually returns the locks to like new working condition.


Depending on year of your car, and location of ignition lock (Dash) removing lock cylinder will be easy and hard to find correct new tumbler, or (column) less than easy to remove lock cylinder and easy to find new part.
