Hi guys. I looking to put a 5spd in my 66 valiant with a /6 and 3spd. Anyone know what trans to use, what bellhousing to use etc. thank you for the help!

I think the easiest thing for you to do would be to put a 4 speed in it. There was a Mopar 4spd which works well behind the slant, that had 4th gear as an overdrive. Ratios are wide, but no wider than your 3 speed, and the 4 speed is fully syncronized. The 70's era cars with a slant will have the bell housing that will work for sure for you. I think you can use the same clutch linkage with both. You will need to cut the floor and put in a higher hump to go over the 4 speed and allow space for the shifter. You may have to change driveshafts. I think the 4 speed takes a slip yoke which is the same as the 727 auto uses.

Putting a 5 speed in is a much bigger deal. I used a Ford T-5 out of a 4 cylinder Mustang from 1987. You must get all the same stuff you would need for the Mopar 4 spd plus an adapter plate the mate the T-5 to the Mopar bell. I actually cut away the cross member to accommodate the larger size of the T-5. Some do not do this, but I wished to raise the tail shaft up slightly to maintain factory alignment.

A sorta-option is the 5-speed supposedly coming out from Passion Performance. It's only "sorta" an option because it's been "coming soon" for at least a couple of years. I'd expect it to be price competitive with other 5-speed kits, but with the benefit that it's supposed to fit anywhere the factory Mopar 4-speed did without cutting the car.

If it was a stock vehicle you are looking for a 1975-1976 A-body, or a 1976-1980 F-body. Like Big D said if you can get the whole smash (shifter, yoke, shift rods, clutch fork, etc...), it will make things easier. Try to avoid the 1975-1987 Truck version as it has a longer tailshaft and you will do a work around in trying to make it ft (see 4 spd article on this board).

Also note that most units will need a rebuild even if the "owner" said it worked great.

You will also need to modify the bellcrank and the bellhousing mount point, because they are not the same between your dart and any f-body.

I've spent a lot of time on our 62 Valiant and the 4 speed conversion. I strongly recommend contacting Brewers about your options. Here's their website http://www.brewersperformance.com/ Wayne has been a huge help in giving me quality part/service when I needed it. They're currently rebuilding me an overdrive tranny.

Just curious, how much will that cost? The last one I had refurbished (I didn't have the time to do myself) was only $318 (I have a local guy that's been doing mopar trannies for 30+ years). If you are drag racing with it I would suggest using the iron case unit, I initially used the aluminum case unit and after 10 races it started to whine in OD while daily driving, the iron case unit I have has taken a lot of hard power launches and is quiet in all forward gears.
