I just replaced the oil pump cover gasket, started the truck and now have no oil pressure and cant figure out why. Can anyone please help me figure this one out? What am I missong? Thanks for any replies. Sam |

(1) did you have oil pressure before you replaced the oil pump cover gasket? (2) is the oil pump cover leaking? (3) how are you checking for oil pressure? Mechanical gauge? Stock electric gauge? How long did you run the engine? (4) did you prime the oil pump by packing the rotor full of vaseline or dribbling oil down the standpipe? (5) have you verified that there is still oil in the sump? (6) if you are using an electric oil pressure gauge, have you verified the sending unit is (a) operational and (b) still connected? |

I ran it a few times just for a few seconds and shutoff when I saw no pressure. 4)No. I didnt know I needed to do this. 5)Yes 6)Yes and Yes |

Just to confirm your pump is not working give the side of the oil filter a tap,you can tell easily by the sound if its empty or full. Have you actually started the engine or just cranking it over? |

Try pulling the oil filter and putting oil down the stand pipe until it is full. Reinstall the oil filter and try again. Sometimes it takes more than a few seconds for oil pressure to build, especially if the pump is dry and having to suck oil up the pickup tube, fill the filter, and then push the oil through the engine. Try running it for seven seconds or so and if you still have no pressure turn it off. |

Ok, thanks Reed! I'll try that. I believe that will do the trick. Steve, I ran it for just about 3 seconds 3 different times. When I heard the familiar light knock like an oil pump spinning dry after an oil change sound with no pressure I immediatly shut it off. I didnt realize it would be necessary to prime the pump through oil filter tube manually to get it primed after removing cover. You guys are lifesavers I REALLY appreciate the advice. Its dark outside now, so I'll just finish it up in the morning and I'll post a followup and let you know how it turns out. Thanks, Sam |

This morning I went out put the oil pump cover back on and removed the oil filter and filled the oil pickup tube on the oil filter base. Then reinstalled the oil filter cranked the truck over and BOOM oil pressure returned! It has 32psi at a hot 750rpm idle and 55psi cold above idle. Not bad for an old 1975 motor with unknown mileage! For any of you who dont know reading this, when replacing the oil pump cover gasket its agood idea to prime the pump as I decribed BEFORE starting motor back up or you may not get any oil pressure. Thanks guys! |
