I've posted before about intermittent issues with my temp gauge sometimes working and sometimes not.
I've learned to live with it. Not a daily driver.

I've not been driving the Toad since last summer when the brakes crapped out on me.
I have been starting it and warming it up monthly and noticed the fuel gauge was on E.

Finished the brake restoration and finally got the brake light switch squared away today and took her out for a spin.
First stop gas station.

I gave the gal $50 for a fill up. Put the nozzle on auto (which I don't normally do with the Valiant) and was
talking with someone interested in the car when the nozzle clicked off and shot gas out.
I was at $16 and a little over 4 gallons.

It's full up and my gauge is now off the E and has climbed to the first line next to the E and maybe a little higher.

Any ideas?

I did have to remove the brake light switch but have touched nothing else underneath.

I appreciate your input.

You didn't fill your tank.

The early models with the near horizontal fill pipe regurgitate and spit back at you way before you fill the tank.


You have to slowly manually fill them until you can see the gas just about to overflow the lower lip of the fill tube.

Well, that's encouraging to hear. Like I said, I don't usually use the nozzle lock on the Valiant because of the fill pipe going in at a 90* angle.

I have to add that after it spit back I considered what you described and mildly rocked the car back and forth a few times to burp it and then tried to add more fuel. It wouldn't take it.

I proceeded to drive the wheels off of it for a half hour or so and then garaged it. I'll hit the station again tomorrow and see if it will take fuel.

Tank is full up.
Went back to the station today and drizzled in about a gallon before it came spilling out.

Gauge goes from E with no power and then to the first line near the E on the gauge with power.

Temp gauge is working correctly now.

I understand the fuel and temp. gauge both work off the same voltage limiter. Since the temp. gauge is working then I am assuming the limiter is OK.

I have read that the grounding for the gauges is through the lower 3 dash panel screws, so I'll make sure I'm good there.

Any other input/ideas are greatly appreciated.

Most likely the sending unit in the tank.


I just fill up ever 200 miles whether I need to or not...........

I'm thinking there is something else going on since the temp gauge
suddenly started working right when the fuel gauge stopped working.

I'd try the 200 mile fill-up method but with the 2 barrel Stromberg and Dutra Duals I can't keep my foot off the gas. I may not make it 200 miles on a tank!

Make sure sending unit is well grounded. Factory used a metal strip the jumped from sending unit’s fuel nipple to steal fuel line, that jumper tends to rot off. Also fifty year old fuel line and its attaching clips corrode. This is the grounding path for gage circuit; it can develop too high resistance that gives inaccurate or intermittent gage readings.

Pull off gage wire from sending unit, ground it to a good ground for just long enough to test, and with key in “onâ€￾ position see if gage reads full. If not electrical resistance of new sending unit may not be same as factory unit, or a mechanical adjustment of its float arm in tank.

You can test the resistance of sending unit with VOM; empty = 73 ohms plus or minus 12 ohms, full = 9.6 ohms (+/-) 1 ohm
