I have a lead on a 225 slant mounted to a 833 four speed that is supposed to be out of a late 70's Aspen. The guy is wanting $475 for the combination. I am wanting to put this in my 1966 D100, and I don't really have an idea of what these are worth. Any opinions are appreciated.

Are all the pieces there like the carburetor, air cleaner, etc? Does the engine run well with no smike or knocks and good, even compression? Does the transmission shift well and operate quietly? If all the answers are positive then the price is fair or even good.

Does your truck have a mechanical clutch? If not you'll need a later truck bellhousing with the provisions for the slave cylinder. Also, you will have to be creative with the floor in regards to the shifter. The 4-speed your truck may have come with is a completely different animal with different bellhousing, clutch, shifter and driveshaft.

Well I'm going to be going in a little blind because the engine and trans are already pulled from the vehicle. Kind of scary, I have been burned before on buying things without having the whole story and it didn't pan out well. I am not sure if the carb and air cleaner are there, however I will be replacing that with some Clifford Performance goodies anyway.

My truck is currently a 3 speed on the column, so I will have to do a little work to get the 4 speed on the floor. My truck has a hydraulic clutch, were the later cars mechanical clutches? Will this bell housing not have a place to bolt the slave cylinder?

The cars have mechanical clutches. You'll need a later model truck bellhousing with the slave cylinder provisions and matching release fork.

I would bring a good battery and compression tester. If they won't allow you to test the compression then the price should be adjusted downward significantly.

And certain trucks also have mechanical clutches in the mid-70's through the 80's...the A-833OD equipped trucks typically were mechanical, and I have seen a few late-70's NP-435 trucks with the mech clutch and the large 1515 bearing for use with the 11" clutch (knock out for the fork is on the driver's side of the bell and there is no hole on the right side like the 60's hydroclutch bellhousings.

The major pain is the moutning pad on the A-833 shorty tailshaft A/F body transmission is a bit off from where it should be on the long tailshaft truck/Van A-833 transmission.
