took the OBD(old blue Dodge) out on a tour of the 4 corners area(AZ, UT, CO, NM). had a great run. only needed 1 screwdriver during the course of the week. i needed the driver to tighten the 6 screws that hold the top of the BBD body to the center section of the body. is it normal for these to loosen up?
it was loose enuff to be leaking enuff fuel that we could smell it under way.
i don't know if the threads r pulling out or if the screws r backing off. they did all tighten when i turned them.

Not if they still have their lock washers on them. Hopefully the top hasn't been taken off too many times to where they are stripped.

What was your mileage?

It SHOULDN'T happen, but I have seen it often enough over the years. (pretty much every Ford 1bbl that I've ever seen had the throttle plate to main body screws work loose). It all depends on just how tight the screws were torqued, how much the gasket crushed, how springy the lock washers are, how much thermo-cycling & vibration the carb received, etc.

since the speedo isn't operational i can only guestimate the milage. the 1st stretch, from LA to the river, looked liked it could have been close to 18mpg. i really doubt that since i wasn't keeping records on total miles traveled. honestly, i was seriously on an "escape the city" run. very little else mattered much.
when my tach shows 2700, i'm roughly at 67mph. we timed it in 2009. most of this ride had the tach between 2000 and 2500. so with an apporiximation of 60mph meaning the 1st 4 hour run put us out 240 miles, the gallons i refilled there told me 18.2 mpg. i think it went down from there as we got to more hills and higher altitudes.

i'll check on the lockwashers and maybe use a bit-O-locktite.

Don't use locktite if you ever want to rebuild or take the carb apart again. Get some small lock washers from a hardware store.

added some star washers to all the bolts. 3 had no lockwashers at all. one of the long bolts to the rear that reach all the way down to the bottom plate wouldn't catch any threads after i add the star washers. the other 5 tightened up nice. it still starts rite up. guess i'll need to get a thread repair kit.
