I'm thinking of running a straight pipe on my 64' valiant, anybody got any tips / advice, what size pip should I use

From my amateur experience...Unless you do something to help with exhaust back pressure! You will loose horsepower and fuel economy

That's because the later emissions controlled vehicles are so stuffed up (restricted) and are lean on the carb calibration. Opening up the exhaust leans it out to the point the engine misfires. The misfiring is what kills fuel economy and power. Open up the exhaust, recalibrate the carb and you'll have better power and economy that stock.

I've had my 71 dart with a straight pipe out the driver side for 6 months now. I love it its loud and gained it a lot of power! I used some 2" pipe from oreilie's, I cut the muffler off and stubbed it out the side from there with a chrome tip on the end! It sounds like a small block!

I have a straight set of pipes on my Chevy 153 4 cyl. in my T Bucket they were great for a while but I know with the 3" and a 40 Flowmaster on my 64 Dart there is a point in the rpm range you will hate it. cap it a little. Dino.

i am running two sections of 6ft flex pipe off of my headers one coming out either side under the doors. its loud. really loud. sounds good though. at idle it sounds like a big block. once you hit the gas and wind it up you can tell its a six. i love the sound but i cant imagine my neighbors do. like fishbgy said at certain rpm its pretty annoying. for me its around 2000-2300. the drone is crazy.

I did it on the Dart. Stock exhaust. Muffler was shot. I put in a piece of flex pipe and used the stock tail pipe out the rear. It was very quiet! No inside the cab drone either.

Didn't sound like a ricer.

I have run straight pipes and glasspacks on vehicles before. The novelty wears off quickly , especially after you try driving on the highway with the horribly loud drone. Run at least a cheapo turbo muffler or yo will be back adding a muffler later.

Casually looking for a Clifford hyperpak intake for cheap.

Kick a boom tube out the passenger side about 2 inches, more quiet for you and dont turn it down so you dont reflect the noise right back up. Fun while it lasts. I straight piped my old B2000 pickup because the muffler was plugged and that 4 banger was freakin loud. Sounds bad ass when you are coming off the gas but blip it and youll hide from embarassment.

I would run simple 2 or 2.5 inch pipe out the back. I've had side dumps that sent exhaust right back at me stopped in traffic or beside walls.
You can get the over the axle pipe lots of places.

When you say "recalibrate the carb" your saying just give it more fuel?

Here's a pic of my shorty style exhaust...i don't have any cats, it has a 2 1/2" magnaflow glasspack (the glasspack is bolted on) the rest of the exhaust is welded.

I chose a dual tip because i thought the split design would help add a little back pressure. I also added three 2 1/2" screws before the tip to help with back pressure. It's not too loud and doesn't have any annoying drone out on the highway. Since this truck is a standard shift i like to be able to hear it when i'm driving

With the way it worked out...I didn't come out to the edge of the tire (i don't know if that's good or bad) but after driving it i've felt both tires and didn't really feel any difference in temperature, so i don't think it's heating up the tire. Later on, i'll probably put a flowmaster chambered muffler on (to insure that there's enough back pressure) and think about shortening it a bit and coming a little further out but this will work for now!
